A Time Trialing Thread

This is a great example of how to pace an out and back tailwind/headwind TT - great ride!

@GregElwell learned from you!

Lol, I am getting credits for my excellent pacing strategy on the N1/15 from what folks see on Strava.

All week itd been a strong NE wind that would have been perfect, and even yesterday was a weaker NE wind. But for the race, almost a straight north and back with a few awkward jinks for roundabouts, it changed to a pure easterly on the way out and there was even a southerly element to the mainly east wind on the way back. It was also 34deg C average (after only being 12deg C 10days before :exploding_head:). That and the course profile kinda dictated the pace.

Intervals.icu tells more.
A bit of a downhill start saw me relatively flying for not too much power for the first 5miles.
I was able to concentrate on getting stable power out in position, except for a few bumps in the middle 5 miles. Its maybe not the best strategy but for me I’ve found as I loose something on the descent anyway to attach the bumps harder and recover a tad on the descent.
The last 5 miles the profile and the developing southerly element saw my average power go up. Lol, I was almost ready to blow and sit at circa 12-13miles. I had been reeling someone in but they started to stretch away again as my motivation was ebbing fast. Then I spotted the camera man which gave me an incentive to stay aero and steadily, as we started to climb, I reeled that rider in again (my 2mins man). About 1/2 a mile from the finish I spotted my 3 minute man and I upped the power to catch him knowing once I did I’d could hang on for the last bit. I maybe should have saved some of that for the sprint to the line but hey ho. The net result saw me 28s down on my pb but my direct competitors were nearly 2-3mins down on theirs. Which saw me first in age group (amazingly only 2folk were in the 45-49 age group though) and rank 1st on spindata (it was only 45 riders entered, 38 on the day). The handicap result aren’t published yet but :crossed_fingers: Ive done ok there too.

I started using a bladder down the front last season when I had a couple of 100 mile TT’s following advice from some in this thread. I was sceptical at first but completely sold on it now and use a half filled bladder for 50 mile TT and even out on training rides when it’s 3+ hours on the TT.

I use the bladder below, I think recommended by somebody here. Prefer it to the roll over tops with the plastic bar, once it’s empty I barely notice it’s there. The angle of the hose coming out is good to run up the side of the torso and out through the sleeve too. I’ve had some elastic sewn onto a lightweight baselayer that holds it in position but also used it without and it still stayed in palce well enough under a tight skinsuit.

Looks like you’re having a good season from the CTT instagram, knew I’d seen this setup somehwere, congrats on the weekend win. Any info on where you got the mono plate adapter for the speed concept bars? Looking to pick an SC frame up but not keen on the stock monobar setup.

Nice setup although it still puzzles me why some TT suit brands haven’t produced a TT endurance style speed suit. All we need is a universal bladder holder sewn in the front and a slit to aid with on bike urination. I know it might seem silly but it’s definitely a problem I’ve experienced and when you’re only 20-30 miles into a 100+ mile ride, I’m not ready to, ā€œlet it goā€ while in position and getting everything wet.

Perhaps this is just something that affects the older, ā€œmastersā€ riders?

This is currently something we’re developing. We will have something ready for the 2024 season. More than likely before then.

50/50 for the bladder on the front or back. For gravel, they tend to prefer the back and this is still a net gain when wind tunnel tested.

Yeah, it’s going well so far. 4 wins out of 7 opens, and a podium at the Tour of Cambridgeshire!

I’m using the D2Z adapter plate. You need to budget Ā£500 or so for the adapter, all the shims, spacers and extensions, so it depends how good a price you’re getting for the SC!

Without it the front end is a bit dated and is a nightmare to adjust!

What size SC frame would you be after? May have an XL with aforementioned monoadapter I’m wanting to part ways with…

Great start to the season in that case!

Thanks for the info, thought that might be the one, not seen many other options around. If I can get a decent price on the frame I’ll probably go for it.

Medium for me unfortunately but if you’re considering breaking it down and would sell the monoadapter separate I’d be interested if I manage to get the frame.

Mine is a large if you want to size up and can wait until end of the year :grinning:

Mono adapter also works well if you can find one, I was able to use some cut down D2Z poles with that.

Since you’re here… :slightly_smiling_face:

I was chatting to someone the other day about airflow around the upper legs. My thighs are quite big, and must contribute a fair chunk to my cda. But all the suits I own have fabric on the legs with little or no texture.

We’ve got overshoes with raised seams and ribbed fabric. Do we need ribbed boxer shorts for time trialling, or is the airflow such a mess by then that it doesn’t really matter?

Maybe I need a new bike with a nice wide front fork

The upper leg goes through way too much of an angle change throughout the pedal stroke to be able to align fabrics correctly. The amount of wash created by the legs too means energising the boundary layer even more with textured fabrics is counter productive.

Tl;dr textured fabrics on bibs don’t work.

Excellent, thanks. That makes sense, I hadn’t thought about the range of angles.

About last saturday

Nice and compact

Lol I was the opposite of compact last night. I don’t think there’s any pictures which is probably a good thing. Although it never got colder than 20deg C, the 14deg C drop in temperature from Saturday convinced my chemo damaged feet they were blocks of ice and clipping in was a nightmare. It wasn’t helped by a twisty downhill start so I didn’t feel confident to look down. I probably got freaked out by the note ā€œNo Pusher Offā€ too and the ā€œDon’t take risks, just Sit Upā€ note. The subsequent downhill through the woods with with strong sunshine coming through the canopy didn’t inspire me with confidence either. Net result the vast majority of the TT was sat up, and whilst it was probably one of my most powerful TTs and I set a few PRs in places, I didn’t use the power wisely. Double Lol, I signed up to Spindata yesterday and its telling me what I’d expect my Cda was 0.254. On a positive note I woke up to find for last Saturday I was indeed 1st in category and spindata tells me it was a better Cda of 0.221.

Last night:

Have you tried pre-tape spray to keep the overshoes from sliding down? I struggled with this for years until I started using the spray.

I got this suggested, but never tried it. Guess I will finally order some and run a few tests with the Notio again. My local TT championship is approaching fast, only 4 weeks and I want to get a good placing this year after working quite successful on my power on the TT over the winter (up from being able to only get 290W in a 20min TT to now 320W in 20min training).
