A Time Trialing Thread

This is a common problem that many riders come up against. I can’t hold my TT position inside for more than a few minutes, but I can hold it for as long as I want outside with no adaption time needed.

Try elevating your front wheel…you can use a multi position front wheel block like the Kinetic ring and use the highest setting. Should help alleviate the problem. Common theory is that the lack of wind resistance makes hold an aero position difficult indoors and that raising the front wheel resolves it. I don’t know if I agree with the theory but the solution definitely works.

They sure did… finished at £608!!

Wow…

If you haven’t already, then join the UK Time Trialling group on Facebook. Pretty active group and quite a lot of secondhand TT kit advertised for sale on there from frames to fully built out bikes. TTers are natural tinkerers who are always testing out different positions, setups, etc which lends itself well to a good secondhand market!

I’m training for long TTs and audaxes. I figure the audaxes will handle themselves. I train in the TT position pretty much 100% from Jan through the season, and by Apr/May I will have some longer sessions that exceed 4 hours.
If you want to perform well in a TT, you have to be specific in the training (and that includes position training). I see too many folks who have full-on TT bikes, but they’re sitting up on the base bars during the latter stages of an event because they can’t hold the position.
In March, I would expect to make little changes to my position (having got 10 weeks training on the bike) mainly to increase comfort and sustainability.

Here is an interesting event I just found out about…seriously thinking about giving this a go next year. Will be in November, so if all proceeds according to plans with vaccinations, it seems likely that it will occur.

4 days, 444 mile TT stage Race…

It’s also $5500 for the frame. :face_vomiting:

I’m in a similar position to a lot of the other athletes on this thread, looking for an event that will likely go ahead next year, as it isn’t mass start, and also for me personally there isn’t the same risks with riding in a group of mixed abilities.

I have opted for the low volume plan, and will be supplementing with a 2-3hr long ride at the weekend, weather permitting. SS Base, Long power build, 40k TT, brings me right up to start of the season.

All my indoor rides are on the TT bike mostly in the aero position, which I am relatively happy with, but I will be raising my hands slightly (and inline with the 10cm rule) when my new extensions arrive. Other fit thing that I want to try is a different saddle. I have the fizzik tritone which is ok for my rotation, but I feel there may be better choices out there. I will be changing back to round rings, from q-rings as well. obviously do one thing at a time…

I am looking forward to hearing what other people have planned for the 2021 season as well as reading reports and feedback on optimized equipment.

Locally some Tri guys hosted a 17 mile TT that I participated in as a test for my upcoming State TT next week. Things went well and I feel pretty good knowing I had plenty of fatigue in the legs and the speed goal was obtained. I look forward to a taper week and the shorter State TT course (25km with less turns). Hopefully I have some good luck this upcoming weekend!

:beers:

thats fast!

i am using a tritone atm too, not that happy with it, find myself slipping forward a lot. Trying to track down an ISM PN 1.1 as ive used it on a borrowed TT bike before, and it was good. Hard to find around here atm though

Trying to dial in the TT fit over the winter and was wondering if anyone here has any advice for what I could do with my position? I tilted the extensions up a bit which seems to be a bit more comfortable and let’s me tuck my head behind my hands. Bike also a bit small for me since it’s a Medium Short BMC TimeMachine and I’m a hair over 6’ tall. I’ve gotten a longer stem and raised the seat post a good amount to compensate (bar extensions are also fully extended). I see that a lot of people push their saddles way forward for TT’s but I feel like I get a bit cramped if I do that? Is that normal and is it more aero? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Kinda hard to get a full sense of your position with the towel over the HB…if you could retake w/o it, that would help.

My initial reaction is that I’d like to see your elbows move out a bit more…but that may not be possible depending on what’s lurking under the towel.

That’s usually to try and get yourself over the top of the BB, where you can produce most power. In your case it might make you feel cramped if (as you say) the frame is a little small - or did you mean cramped in terms of the tightness of your hip angle?

Got old TT bike and wheelset (tubular) and i never really focused on the equipment, but now i would like to. So i can see that tires seems to matter a lot? What kind of tubulars you guys would buy for time trials? Vittoria corsa speed?

What about chains?

Not quite…it allows you to get lower in front by opening up your hip angle. If anything, you can lose FTP power by moving forward, but this is offset by the gains in aerodynamics.

Impressive power and speed!

Thanks buddy!

I definitely had an off day at the state TT although @Joe and I were able to win our respected classes and become champions. I also raced a team Merckx class in the afternoon and had great results!

Regarding my effort, I’m not sure if I was slightly ill, had a bad taper, or just the warmer then normal weather. I could only manage just under 310 watts and 28.5mph. I was really hoping for 29+ and know I could do it assuming everything is working as normal.

Until next time

Wow I’m dumb for leaving the towel there. I’ll try to get some more pictures soon!

Cramped as in I feel like I’d have to hunch my back to be able to fit if that makes sense? Don’t really feel a noticeable difference with the hip angle. Should pushing the saddle forward be accompanied with taking a spacer out? Or should they be done in isolation
