Workout Levels V2 update? [Unstructured Rides]

I thought you raised a point about hero days, an issue that exists with FTP tests, too.

Did they say in the last podcast PL2 was accidentally released?

Briefly but then they reversed it, if I recall correctly.

Jon mentioned sharing a screenshot by mistake on IG for a period of time, then he pulled it down.
Nate mentioned a very brief TR app release that was also fixed swiftly.

It’s all up there in the links to the video I shared, just not sure exactly when other than that section already starting.

I’ve only listened so far from your link forward, so it was somewhere in that last 10-15 minutes.

RLGL was accidentally released. I saw it and got excited and then it was taken back. Looks promising. RLGL has WLV2 running in the background if I recall correctly and will come out before WLV2.

Have they said yet what RLGL is based on? I.e. Is it just what TR is picking up from your rides (power, HR, survey responses, etc) or is it going broader and looking at metrics like HRV, RHR, sleep?

From what I gathered it is only about ride information that TR has access to.

Then they can deal with what I think is a somewhat common problem… RG Color Blindness

I come and go from TR structured plans to zwift racing. For me it’s somewhat relieving seeing my PLs so low when l come back to TR. It gives me the rest l need (until I progress to more realistic PLs) but l refuse to take. Somehow l should thank TR for not adapting PLs to nonstructuted rides :joy:

This may have been asked/discussed before, but didn’t see it:
Will WLV2 consider rides done in Rouvy/Zwift/etc.? Or just outdoor rides?

Yes, from the way I take it, any ride with power data imported to the TR world will “count”.

There really is no difference in the power data file from an outside ride vs one in a virtual world on the trainer from what I know. Power over time related to your current FTP and such, gets coupled with the TR magic to determine the PL values of that imported ride and goes from there.

Something I have been considering regarding WLV2 and outdoor training in general…how will this work with different power meters? This is a real head scratcher for me. When I train indoors I train on a dedicated trainer bike and use the tacx neo 2t trainer for power. This takes power at the cassette. Outdoors I ride my titanium bike with quarq power meter taking power at the spider. When I switched from my titanium bike indoors to the steel bike (switching from spider power meter to cassette power meter) I had to do a new ramp test and accept a pretty big ftp “loss”

This combined with the general difference between power indoors and outdoors leads me to wonder how it will be accounted for with WLV2?

Feckin RAG Status - the bane of my R/G colourblind working life!

My two cents, which may not be worth even two cents:

Overall I’ve been happy with adaptive training and the adjustments it makes to my training plans when I am following them during the “indoor season.” This is the only place where PLs have any real value to me.

As I’ve used TR for many years, I have a pretty good sense of what workouts are appropriate at the start of a new plan, even if my PLs have all reset to 1.0, and just select my own for the first few workouts in each training zone. The PLs then instantly update based on the results of these rides and adapt the rest of the plan as appropriate. If I misjudged my “first workouts” (high or low), I just select alternates for the next proposed workouts and let the system continue to adapt from there.

I do also occasionally complete TR workouts during the “outside season,” indoor due to weather, outdoor when I feel guilty for too much riding just for fun, and sometimes near the end of the season to give me data points before I move inside for the winter and start a structured plan.

All that said, though, it really would be cool if the PLs were maintained automatically from unstructured ride data.

Now I’ll make some popcorn and follow the RLGL discussion…

So… there is a chance itll actually be released?

We are nearly a year on from Nates post at the start of this thread saying it was 95% - Id been assuming the approach they were trying to follow had proven unworkable. Although it has been so long now that theyve had time to start again from scratch…

I believe they encountered irreparable issues. If memory serves, they’ve pivoted towards a different feature that should provide a similar end-result: The “red light green light” system.

  • Nate gave that as the basic summary. They got a long way into their initial idea and could not make it work to their satisfaction. Then they restarted (around a year ago?) with a different approach. He covered it in a podcast so I am probably getting the gist but not nailing the details.
  • Sort of right per my take. They did hit a wall and restart, but they still have a new version of Workout Levels 2.0 intended. It is just a different way to do it than their initial method, apparently.

  • The Red Light / Green Light feature is and always was a separate from, but connected to WLV2. The podcast I linked above mentions that RLGL is the next actual release intended for us, and it is built upon the Workout Levels 2.0 as part of how it makes the recommendations.

Just to add to that: the way I understood @Nate_Pearson was that he did not imply Workout Levels v2 would be released to the public alongside RLGL (apart from the under-the-hood bits that make RLGL work).
