Did “Border” this morning, VO2 max 6.7. Had to intermittent “pauze” the last 4 intervals, does anyone consider this workout as ‘failed’?
If it was me, I would say that I had failed it
I would probably consider it a pass, but rate it as all out.
Look at your HR trace for the first interval as compared to the others. That first one looks pretty good. I’d say that in the other 4 you didn’t get the expected stimulus and so none of them was successful.
Sorry, but it’s a fail from me this time (although I’m not a fan of binary pass/fail ratings)
Side note: ERG mode is really not your friend for this sort of workout.
I indeed gave it a pass and rated it as “very hard”.
You’re probably right about the ERG mode, but I love flat lines…
Wait until you see what it now expects you to be able handle next time!
This
Point taken, I went easy on myself this morning… Altered the RPE to “Maximum” but no changes were made to next week’s schedule where I have a 7.0 VO2 max workout ahead.
If it was me - and I am not saying this is the correct thing to do - I would repeat Border (until I cleanly completed it), rather than trying a higher PL VO2 workout.
Even with switching it to max effort no reason to go hard on yourself. The post workout survey is there to help calibrate the following workouts. Personally I do not want to be served up a workout that I will probably need max effort to complete as it would set back other workouts as well.
So I guess what you need to ask yourself is … were you well prepared for Border? If so, and it was just too hard for where your fitness is at right now, you’ve got to ask yourself if it makes sense to be working at that level of difficulty.
Much better to work at slightly lower power and get 4 or 5 solid intervals in. Or even to shorten the intervals down from, say, 4 minutes to 2m30s and do an extra couple.
With 4/5 intervals done using bailouts, we’d lean more towards “did not pass.”
Switching your Post-Workout Survey result to “All Out” should give Adaptive Training some improved data on this for the rest of your plan as well, so good call doing so already.
In cases like this, Workout Alternates can be a great tool to use to help you find harder/easier sessions for any given day.
I also like what @Buckethead said above – don’t take these instances as going “hard” or “easy” on yourself – instead, think of them as reflecting honestly on the workout and the work done. If a workout was difficult and you had to use bailouts/pauses to scrape through it, that may be a sign that it would be one worth repeating.
That is what I do, unless it was a total blowout fail. And killing it next time feels so good.
Boy, you got to the end but still worried whether you did enough?
Here’s my patented workout evaluator to help you decide.
It’s a did not pass for me.
