Which event for Randoneurring brevets

Hi there,

Im planing to do my super-randonneur series in 2026 and did not find a fitting event to use in the plan builder. Any recommendation on this? As is I set my 600 km brevet as an A stage race, but there might be a better option?

Hi Dominik, I’m kicking tyres about doing one too. Are you targeting PBP 2027?

I think that A-event classification is appropriate for a 600, yes. It’ll almost certainly take out two days. (Time limit is 40 hours.) So you could set it up as a two-day stage race, but haven’t bothered with that for mine in February because I have a recovery week immediately following. If you don’t mind being a tiny bit less fresh, you could call it a B event & I don’t think it’s the end of the world. Randonneuring, after all, is not racing.

Bear in mind if you label too many of your brevets A-events, & they’re too close together, the system will require you to reclassify some to B or C.

Yes, if everything goes as planned I’m targeting PBP 2027, but to date it seems humanly impossible  I never rode more than 270 km, but am happy to try. I did classify the 600 as A-Event, 300 and 400 as B and 200 as C, which worked fine  I was just wondering if there was a more obvious or ā€œrightā€ way to do it.

There’s some good advice in THIS thread, stage race seems correct, that’s what I’ve done. I’ve found that the ā€˜stock’ plans are a fair bit low on volume and you may want to consider how to deal with that. With the upcoming shiny new update that’s about to drop this might not be as much of an issue. You could consider going for one of the General Fitness in Plan Builder rather than a specific event, Audax is more about good all round fitness and a strong mentality rather than a race specific type of fitness. From most of the posts I’ve read, one VO2 and one Threshold/Sweetspot workout per week and the rest of your training Zone 2 / Endurance is what most people recommend.

Sounds like a Polarized plan to me.

Sounds like what (UK) audaxers were doing in the 1960s…..not much new in the world of ā€˜making legs go in circles’!

I’ve been using TR to train for randonneuring for four years now, and been really happy with it. Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • I set my brevets as Gran Fondo events in the calendar, with my biggest event as the A, early/hard brevets (e.g. the first 300 or 400 of the season) as B events, and then everything else C. I don’t bother setting 600s as a stage race, but I do for 1200s.
  • During the winter, I have three days of intensity per week, then fill in the rest of my training time with endurance volume. Once outdoor riding/brevet season starts for me here in Canada, I swap one of the intensity workouts for another long endurance ride.
  • My run-up to PBP 2023 followed TR’s recommended training volume with a CTL around 70 most of the summer. It worked ok, although I think I would have benefited from more endurance volume. I added this outside of TR for London-Edinburgh-London this past year and felt much better prepared.
  • If you want more volume than your TR plan gives, this is something you’ll have to add yourself. TR’s plan builder really does not want to give you lots of volume, especially if you are just starting or coming back from a break. I start by doing an additional lower Z2 workout on a rest day, then once I’ve acclimated adding more time to an endurance ride, then gradually adding more Z2 around other workouts, until I eventually arrive at the volume I want to maintain.
  • Red / Yellow days trigger a little too easily for me after brevets. If I followed the recommendations blindly and accepted all adaptations, my training volume and intensity would be too compromised during brevet season. Use it as a guide, not a rule.
  • Another great thing to do on TR rides is test nutrition options. I like experimenting with homemade drink mixes during the winter so that I have it dialed in for my brevets.

Good luck on your SR series this year!

@marktron ā€œMy run-up to PBP 2023 followed TR’s recommended training volume with a TSS around 70 most of the summer.ā€ - Did you mean a TSS of 700? A TSS of 70 for a week’s worth of training is lower than my chill recovery week.

Yeah sorry, a typo there - I meant my CTL was around 70 for most of the summer leading into PBP.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks.

Just a quick piece of info. I just signed up and started a plan with my A race as a 1000k brevet (Garden State 1200) that I set up as a Gran Fondo of 84 hours at low intensity. Turns out that breaks the system and it outputs a -571 (negative) TSS for the event. So you are better off using either a stage race or some other event type than a single race for anything over 400k.

You should report that to support. Hopefully they can sort that out.

Yeah, they know and helped me change it to a 3 day event. It was just some sort of database error probably where you can’t tell it an event lasts more than 24 hours.

Hey @DominikBuchner

You’d want to set it as an A Event Stage Race as @roleypup mentioned, and set the appropriate discipline for it.

What you have on your Calendar looks good!

Thanks you all for your input. I’m hyped for 2026 and cannot wait for the weather to get better

Not kidding when I say put the Wawa app on your phone before doing the Tour de Wawa.

Good call. I have to get through a meniscus cartilage surgery in 3 weeks first, but this will be my 5th since childhood, so it’s nothing new to me. I wish I could have it done today as opposed to waiting, but that’s how it goes.

I work with what I know I’ll be able to resupply during the brevet. If I can’t buy the ingredients in a garage or convenience shop to mix with plain water during a brevet, then it’s not much use as a drink mix.

Good luck to the OP with their SR. This will be my 15th year of doing an SR in the build up to a 1000km+ event.
