Currently use the trainer for cadence and power reading. But seeing as the cadence on a trainer can only be an estimate then trying a separate cadence meter has to be the way to go. Will give it a try and report back!
There must be something to say about training imitating racing

Second time through week 5 of SSBMVI. Trying to frontload before a week off the bike. Slept horribly, woke up too early, legs are tired.
Whatâs your cadence during the interval sets? If you bump that by 5 rpm, you may get that extra jump in HR youâre looking for.
Between 100-105 for the first set, 95-100 for the next two. I seemed to be recovering faster going from high cadence (during the interval) to low (during the recovery) so tried to keep it more stable so Iâd enter the next interval at a higher HR. Was probably the wrong thing to do. Might have drifted up a bit more with each set otherwise.
Taylor -2 it was brutal after a 18% FTP increase. Wasnât feeling too good either bad sleep, worse fuelling. Managage to do the first 2 sets at 90% and the last one at 92%.
Tallac - 3x15min SS. That FTP bump last week is showing its impact⌠Again comparing with my last base cycle early this year, Iâm still below my HR doing the same workouts in the same sequence, even though my FTP is 6% higher, so I guess thereâs still room to grow.
Last week of SSBII MV, was going quite nicely until I came across Spencer + 2.
3mins @ 120%
where was the build up to that, last week it was 45secs and then descending for 1:15. Good job itâs the final week or Chad would be putting in 5mins next TuesdayâŚ

Hey, Iâm just circling back to this comment as Iâm starting SSBMV2 tonight with the new FTP. The last thing I want is an inflated FTP! I went back and did the calculation, and my best 1 min. effort at the end was actually bang on 400w, so 75% of that is a 300w FTP. The test gave me essentially an 11w penalty by skipping the level and emptying the tank. So my calculated FTP of 289w seems about right - maybe even a bit low. Anyway, thanks for mentioning it - now that I did the math, it makes more sense. Going forward, Iâll be more careful about the last steps.
Didnât know it did that, good to know it adjusts automatically because when your at the end of the ramp mental calculations etc go right out of the window ! Thanks for feeding that back.
I shifted to the OG VO2max work for SSB2 last time through. Just wasnât getting much out of the VO2max work until the last one (Spencer +2). Definitely preferred the old version which starts with 2min intervals and works up from there.
Was a mess yesterday. I overslept all three of my alarms so had to scratch the morning workout and got stuck in a meeting in the afternoon (one of those meetings that could have been summed up in an email but instead took two hours) so had to nix the pool. So I got on the bike and pumped out McAdie +1 with a 30min bonus aerobic cool down (seems to be the go to ride of the past couple of days).
90â easy this morning around Watopia flats then a 3x3mile tempo run on the treadmill this afternoon just in time for yoga after.
Ready to crush the rest of the weekâŚ
Thanks @kurt.braeckel, I just found your progression on one of the other threads. I might âborrowâ it if you donât mind ![]()
Iâll keep doing the FTP at +5%, but will definitely need to lengthen the intervals or reduce the recovery as well I think.
