Where I live, it’s impossible to do a pure low intensity ride outside. I have a 10% slope to climb my driveway to the road and a couple of 12% hills to climb to get back to my house.
I usually watch something while doing these rides.
I’m so inspired by you people who have the mental strength to fail and then keep going afterwards instead of wobbling off the trainer and moping [like I usually do]. Kudos.
Hike…no bike
Nice to get off the bike and work some other leg muscle groups.
Self-supported (full pack) Hadrian’s wall walk, East to the West coast of England.
95.1 miles/ 153km with a total of 36hrs 56 minutes of walking time (4 days) , three campsites and one B&B fully enjoyed.
It was hot hard work, heat wave over the bank holiday unexpected! The 44km day finished off my feet! they are in a bit of a state but legs feel ready for some trainer work.
Huxley -5 today, or as Coach Jonathan calls it ‘Attack and Repeats’.
Didn’t manage to hit either of the biggest sprint efforts, which was disappointing but on the plus side, I do now seem to be able to control my leg speed up to 120RPM.
Gentle outdoor endurance rides planned for tomorrow and Saturday, then race Sunday.
It’s funny because they’re long. Not short. Ha. Ha ha. ![]()
Here’s where I had to play catch-up because I was literally daydreaming about sweet-spot workouts in a rest interval and missed the start:

finished a massive block of racing and training and now resting with a bag of peanut butter filled pretzels! lol
Finished my 2nd week of VO2Max mini-camp - Freel +1 (2x5x60" @ 127%), Bashful (3x5x60" @ 125%), and Baird +2 (3x5x90" @ 120%). I can now see where “real” VO2Max starts for me - the difference between Bashful with its 60 seconds intervals and 1:1 interval to recovery, vs Baird with its 90 seconds intervals and 1.5:1 ratio, is visible directly in HR and perceived effort. I probably recover too fast for Bashful to really push me. Baird adds 50% more time above FTP (at 120% rather than 125%), but I spent twice as much time in the 85-95% MHR zone, and went way higher HR-wise.
I’m off 2 weeks (will go back to running), and will resume the “experiment” afterwards. I’ll probably change to 2 sessions per week, starting at 90" intervals and working my way up to 3 minutes. Let’s see when I blow up…
It’s the off that’s short. That time warp where the clock slows down to a crawl and almost starts going backwards during the intervals, and then spins up to a blur during the recovery valleys - that’s what Shortoff refers to. I guess.
That sounds familiar, I have no clue why…
