Warner sells GCN back to original owners

is it me or has the GCN website not been updated in a week? Was the website staff laid off as part of the sale?

From the article in the OP

“ Cycling Weekly understands that the website will not be continuing in its current form.”

Today’s GCN Show topic: What’s Next for GCN?

tldw:

  1. Going to keep making videos (bigger, better, yada, yada)
  2. Shutting down the website
  3. Some kind of “Membership” ($) support system is coming.

They confirmed on today’s GCN show that the site is going away.

I actually never knew they had a website in the first place. I can’t stand their video clickbait, so I’d guess it was articles like “Why riding your bike is horrible exercise!”

I lol’d

Not to undermine your feelings but isn’t what you described the typical etiquette and expectation of an “A” group ride that is not designated as “no drop”?

It was actually pretty good…Daniel Benson was the editor and there were a lot of great articles. I had switched to that vs. Cycling News for my regular browsing.

Benson left out in the cold…again. Man, that guy is cursed.

Bullying is part of British culture, it’s how you show that you care about someone! If you didn’t, you would just ignore them, it’s a sign of endearment :man_shrugging:

Perhaps you should ask him how he feels about it…

I’m sure that a site will continue to exist with the normal branding, links to their videos, merch, etc. It’s just the current “all things cycling news” site that will go away.

Hey Rob, I’m sorry that you were bullied. It definitely doesn’t sound like those were good friends.
Regarding British culture, I don’t think bullying is really the right word. “Taking the piss” (as they call it) generally comes from a place of love, and respect, rather than the malice associated with bullying. If it really made people feel bad, that would be bullying and be something different. They certainly have bullying there just like we do, but this ain’t that. When they tease Ollie about being dropped, Si about his ankles, or Dan about being out of shape, it’s about humour, warmth, and humility, not malice. They’ve actually talked about it previously when they got some feedback from folks who didn’t get it. They assured us that it was all in fun, that they genuinely like each other and get along, and that no one’s feeling were getting hurt.

I understand that this wan’t your experience, but that’s not what’s going on here.

I agree with that up to a point. There’s bullying and there’s taking the piss out of your mates. It’s not the same. Ask any kid who went to a British boarding school.

(… and the GCN folks certainly aren’t bullying each other.)

If you’re good friends and British it feels like the more merciless it’s is the closer you are, but only about the irrelevant things.

I know my closest friends don’t hold back but will be there as a shoulder to cry on (metaphorically and physically) without question.

Although I could see if you’re not British (or exposed to us) that it does look like they’re really picking on Dan/Ollie and being dicks.

Thanks. I don’t deny that it could be a cultural thing, but friends that I have had would never be so sharp, so wounding.

Should I ask him how he felt? What’s the point. Apparently folks from the UK expect to be abused. Happy for them. But everyone can relax. The gear heads lost riders, and then were surprised how few people show up, and now have a ‘Lite’ component and have gotten more people so I guess it worked. I remember one ride where I an another were dropped, and this other rider was stubbornly trying to follow the group, and being dropped farther behind every second. I offered to ride with them, but they would not give up trying to look pathetic. I left them furiously looking like they were going to blow a major vessel, following the dust of the group. I gave up that season shortly after seeing that.

Maybe I should have ridden with the seniors at the time, but they were brutal too. Maybe I should give up riding? HELL NO!! I’d rather die on the bike, if I have a choice… :sunglasses:

Now if everyone can move on from my comments.

Dan Lloyd confirms he will no longer be part of The Breakaway or Eurosport’s race coverage.

Well that sucks…I thought Dan was a really good commentator, arguably the best on the team.

So was the acquisition by Warner just a way of getting the rights to show the races that GCN/Playsports had ?

Does this mean all those rights now go back to GCN/Playsports and potentially a new home for race coverage ?

I think it was the other way 'round.
Eurosport (Warner) had the rights and when they bought PlaySports, GCN got access so they could put together GCN+.
