Vasectomy... recovery?

I moved your post under the existing thread with lots of info for you to review.

A lot quicker than having sex, if memory serves. I think I was doing easy rides even the same week, just listen to your body and Dr… I remember that I didn’t ice enough and that I was in a new relationship at the time and rushed back into sex before I should have. I don’t remember riding really being an issue, just take it easy and short. I remember using brief style underwear during the healing process too which was helpful for me, I typically wear boxers. If you’re sore on the bike, just turn around and default to whatever recommendation the dr gives/gave you.

I had a Vasectomy last Monday recovery has been slower than I thought . I sat around for 2 days icing a lot. ton of Ibuprofen. Everything felt like it was slowly getting better, but on Satuday it all just hurt again. Laid around most of Saturday and Sunday. And Monday I started to notice an improvement again.

Everything is just a dull ache. I have to wear a jockstrap pretty much always to help. I also got SAXX briefs.

I was able to get on the trainer today and do a short 30min ā€œenduranceā€ ride. Everything feels too big still, but got through and so far no additional pain.

I was really hoping I would be one of those jumping around in three days. But, at this pace it will be closer to two weeks before I am on a mountain bike again.

Update: Its now been 12 days since the op. I was going to get on the trainer 7 days in but life got in the way, and that whole weekend so I ended up doing an hour endurance on Monday and did the Ramp Test + 30 min endurance yesterday. Everything is ā€œfineā€. There is a dull sort of nagging/pulling sensation down there but its not discomfort or pain at all. Most of the bruising is now gone and the puncture wound is healing well too.

Looked back in my notes: had it on the 4th, was back on the bike on the 9th. I remember being more sore than anticipated. Tight underwear and sitting on an ice pack most of the day helped a lot. Being able to bike indoors is definitely a plus, as I remember being not so happy about potholes on my commute the first week after the 9th.

This is pretty much my identical experience thus far. I’m on day eight and tried to hop on for a 30-minute endurance ride this morning. I thought the bib would offer enough support, but the higher cadence was still too much bumping. I was in some significant discomfort within a couple minutes. My doctor told me to stop immediately if this was the case, so I did.

Anyone have a similar experience a week after the operation? How did it end up/how much longer were you off the bike? I know everyone’s recovery is individual, but seeing so many guys back on the bike within a week really got my hopes up. Thanks for any and all insight.

I think I was on the trainer a week later, but easy ride only and in general the level of discomfort both during and after the procedure was appreciably higher than I was expecting.

I definitely was not one of those ā€œfine 2-3 days laterā€ people, but I think by the end of the 2nd week I was riding relatively uninhibited.

Nice! Thanks for the reply. I’ll give another shot this weekend and see how it feels.

I’m in for my procedure on Feb 13…any shot at being ready for my A event on April 27? Or has my goal of winning Liege gone out the window??

Joking aside, I am legitimately concerned that my season has taken a major hit given the timing of my surgery and my A event (BWR SD…sadly, not Liege).

I need some encouraging words, crew!

It wasn’t that bad in terms of the procedure / recovery. If you can manipulate your training plan into that week being a recovery week that’d be beneficial.

Though I had to get it done twice as the first time the verification sample came back positive for sperm (several times). I didn’t know that was possible and it was a nuisance.

That’s how I have it planned out now. I actually blocked off two weeks. Right or wrong, that’s what I’m mentally preparing myself for.

I think I left it about 10 days before I even considered sitting on a bike. Even then it was a 15 min short spin, building up every day or so by another 15mins.

Wasn’t worth the rush to have issues further down the line etc (play the long game)

Was back fully rested and recovered after that. First run was on about day 14

I got on the bike 6 days after with no issue.

You’re giving me hope. I think I just need to get out of my own head and just roll with whatever happens.

It seems there’s a lot of individual variability. For me it was almost like nothing happened. There was very little swelling or discomfort, and only for a couple of days. Within a week I was back to normal. That wasn’t exactly what the doc recommended, but they tend to pretty conservative, which isn’t a bad thing.

Pretty good advice for almost any aspect of training, too.

I wasn’t a cyclist back then, so I can’t say.

I was back on a motorcycle in a day, but it was uncomfortable. I was also pretty young (26?) and probably healed faster than the typical age bracket.

I got the triple whammy; cut, cauterize, and a section removed. But more invasive (I guess?) but pretty damn effective.

Greatest thing ever when I divorced a little more than 10 years later.

I just had mine done back in early december. Wanted to be back on the bike within a week but ended up being closer to 2 as was recommended. Doc recommended taking it easy for a couple days to reduce/prevent bruising and I probably should have gone easier the following day (less walking, more lounging) or 2 so those who haven’t had the procedure yet take heed. Things got decently bruise-y and the incision spot was tender. Ice packs helped for a while and I’d recommend putting petroleum jelly or something to protect the incision so it heals faster. Got it done on a Monday and was doing dans not by the next friday but the one after. Jewels were still tender but once I got going that subsided. By later in the month I was fully back to normal and things have been fine since.

I just had this done a few months ago. i took it super easy for a couple of days, was back on the trainer Day 7, back on the road bike Day 9, and did a 52 mile Mtb ride three weeks later. Highly individual, of course, but my recovery went much better than expected.

2 weeks off the bike for me. Then got into 1hour rides for another week and did a 3hour ride after. I tried to ride after 1 week and couldn’t
