Under the new system are custom workouts treated correctly?

I seem to remember that when PLs were introduced custom workouts were not properly scored - IIRC correctly you could re-create a TR workout through the workout creator and it would get a different PL (usually lower).

I just kinda curious if the model only looks at watts now, are custom workouts properly accounted for?

Based on my observation, no, don’t think they are counted. Two reasons for this:

  1. My custom workouts no longer have a progression level indicated for them. They used to with the “old” system
  2. I had been doing level 7.8 vo2max workouts with a higher “old” FTP. My “new” FTP is 6% lower and my vo2max progression level dropped to 4.3

I have yet to get through both podcasts, so it’s possible they cover custom workouts there.

If not, I’m going to ask TR support. Although I’d bet they’re very busy right now!

I did listen to both. No mention of custom workouts. Although, they said outside workouts are accounted for so maybe …

Thx. Sounds like I should contact TR support now.

As a test, I added an AI-chosen vo2max workout to my calendar for today.

It gave me a 0.8 IF workout. This is based on a new lowered FTP, and has a PL of 6.0.

The usual VO2max workout I do is a 0.9 IF. At my higher old FTP.

So the AI has not taken into account my past performance on VO2max.

All of my workouts are custom. If I don’t get credit for them, the new AI feature will be of little use to me.

They are properly accounted for in the fact that the AI doesn’t care about your AL/PL when chosing your next workout. Just the work you did. It is not properly accounted for in regards to it moving the red bar, the AI doesn’t care about the red bar.

Sticking to cycling, it is my understanding that the New and Improved AI properly takes into account all rides when making adaptation. That would include indoor TR plan workouts, outdoor plan workouts, any other custom workout indoor or outdoor, and any unstructured riding indoor or outdoor. It also now uses HR, whereas it didn’t prior. That would be great if that’s true, despite some bugs and teething problems.

I believe there is a bug around custom workouts that we’re working on squashing, :bug:

It’s listed in the “What We’re Working On” thread.

  • Some custom workouts may not be handled correctly by the AI

    • Status: :wrench: Engineers are working on a fix

@eddie Any update on this? A couple of Qs:

  1. Will PLs be added for custom workouts?
  2. Will the AI give me credit for the custom workouts that I complete - both in predicting future FTP, and in adjusting my recommend plan workouts to reflect what I am capable of doing in my custom workouts?

Adding to this: I did one of my custom VO2max workouts today. It had an IF of 0.94 vs my new, lower, AI FTP. My VO2max progression level stayed at 4.3. So looks like I’m still lot getting credit for custom workouts.

@eddie I heard from Carter on your support team.

Understood (but also a bit disappointed) that PLs will not be shown for custom workouts and custom workouts will not contribute to PLs.

Carter indicated that the system would take custom workouts into account when generating workout recommendations and predicting FTP.

I’ve yet to see evidence of the latter. The only data point I have right now is TR planning a future VO2max workout for me with an IF of 0.83, when I completed a custom VO2max workout yesterday with IF of 0.94.

Anyways, for now I’m doing my usual custom workouts at my “old” (pre AI) FTP.

Maybe it’ll take the AI system a few cycles through to fully catch up?

Workout I did yesterday.

TR planned VO2 workout in a few weeks.

What if you swap out something next week or this week? Is there an FTP prediction between today and the 24th?

I believe that there is a bug with custom workouts that we’re wrapping up now.

Since that workout you completed was a custom one, that’s likely what’s causing the issue.
