Unbound gravel race recap

I have di2 on both bikes and it’s been flawless.

12s shimano is coming

It’s just so good. I remember trying it at Interbike in what had to be 2008 or 2009 and I was a hardcore Campy guy. I wanted to hate it, but it was just awesome even back then. From an economy of motion perspective, it seems like a no brainer for such a long event where I’m sure my hands will get beat up regardless. Little things, but like adding a carbon handlebar, it all adds up.

I’m going to upgrade, it’s just a matter of when. Not too worried about 12spd. GRX will likely lag behind a bit anyway.

Why wouldn’t you ride when it rains? Are you going to not start Unbound of it’s raining? I did a solo 100 a few weeks ago in the rain. Mostly on protected bike paths to avoid the cars but it’s all just Z2 time on the bike so I don’t really care about the speed.

Did I say I wouldn’t ride? No. Do you have any idea about my experience riding in rain, in cold, in snow? No. Therefore should you not assume? Yes.

Good luck. Will be a challenge to source all the parts in time. Not saying it can’t be done, but it might require shopping multiple shops/vendors to get everything.

Yeah, I know as I’ve been looking for months. There’s an ebay seller that has a full upgrade kit w/o brake calipers for like $1300. Not great, not terrible.

I’m crushed 674tss so far this week. Another 4 hour ride, 60miles and 5700’ climbing. I need to lose weight.

Goal is 2 easy days, intervals indoors Saturday and 100 miles on Sunday, then rest week

First gravel ride on the Ridley kanza fast and it was awesome, I liked the 1x set up

Preach.

I’m so fat the scale doesn’t work. I put 3 new batteries in. Might be time to replace it

Use KG instead of pounds…you’ll weigh less. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(Corollary: ride in KM, not miles…you’ll be faster!)

Takes forever to lose a Kilo though

Last Thursday was 245W with the incorrectly spun down Kickr Core. Tonight was 266W…so that’s certainly helping to prove the point of overly optimistic IF #'s. Cheers to all. Now I need to eat and go pack for the Gravel Battle of Sumter Forest. Last year the guy that won my age group placed 4th overall, so…

That’s a nice increase.
Now your overs are your unders.

How long is the race?

Thanks.

74 miles. Only about 1/2 is gravel…and fast gravel at that. Taper has been good to the legs this week, feeling fresh so we’ll see how it shakes out. With so much pavement, I’m thinking I’m going to try and find a group to stay with for awhile…not really use this as a pacing experiment, but just ride for fun and enjoy the race as it comes.

Your running a good tire for so much pavement.

Finding a good group will really help.

Well I picked a hard over under workout. I was not able to do overs at 115%. So I backed down to 90%/110%. Considering I was supposed to do 90/105 I think this was a success considering I set 24 new records

Just finished up my week 1120tss.

I need to start adding hours to my rides

Finished the 72mi race Saturday. Got to say hey to Ted King. Lots of punchy climbs and many over 8-9%, a few 12-15% and one 20% at the finish. Nice gravel roads, terrible paved roads. IF of. 81 with the new FTP. Long 6hr drive home after…

Recovery ride today with my local club, 30mi.

Rest week then back into Build. Doing Sustained Power this time, did General last cycle. Debating doing Rolling Road Race Specialty again or switching to Century. I’m thinking that RRR might be better considering the terrain and my upcoming long Z2 rides on weekends.

Rest week this week with 81 days till unbound.

I have 4 weeks left of general build. I need to figure out whats next. Do I do rolling road race or century plan? I am leaning towards Rolling road race, and then add threshold or high sweet spot stuff in when i am not logging in high miles. I also need to make sure I fully recovery from the past 3 weeks, this was a tad more work then my previous highs.

Lots of short, punchy climbs in Unbound…seems reasonable.
