Trip - what to do

Hello TR friends,
I have been using TR for 6 months and I have been consistent with the workouts. But with a trip coming up where I won’t have any access to a gym nor a bike for 10 days, can you give me some suggestions what to do so that my fitness doesn’t drop off so much? I will have time in the morning to do a jog for 30 minutes. Any help would be appreciated!

David

Do a 30 minute jog. :+1:

I can resist anything except temptation.

Hey there,

10 days isn’t as bad as it sounds! Believe it or not, you won’t lose much fitness over that much time – and what little you do will come back very quickly.

Jogging can be fun if you are used to it – if you haven’t been running, though, we’d advise against it. Running can be very tough on your muscles/joints if you haven’t been doing it, and running only during your trip may not be worth the injury risk/recovery toll.

If you aren’t accustomed to running, we’d recommend enjoying some time off during your trip. While travel isn’t necessarily true recovery as it comes with its own stressors, you may still find that you come back with some fresher legs and higher motivation for your future training sessions.

Enjoy the trip and dont fret. You lose some of your high end speed but the half life of muscles is massive and you’ll loose none of your Endurance muscle in that short time. Like Zack says what little you have lost will come back fast. I had an enforced break of 5.5 weeks in 2019 and all I did was walks, short at first but building up to 15miles. A month later I set my then fastest 25mile TT to that point.

Thank you so much for this information. I don’t jog at all. So, this is so so helpful!

20 mins of skipping is good. Easy to travel with a rope and can do it anywhere :+1:t2:

No problem! Speaking from experience. I think many other athletes on here have done the same.

As @HLaB mentioned, walking can be a good alternative instead of running. I’ve certainly felt tired and maybe a little sore from lots of walking on trips, but never quite wrecked in the way many athletes tend to feel after they start/get back into running. Walking, of course, doesn’t quite feel like “exercise/training” in the same way cycling/jogging/etc. may to us when we are used to training, but it’s a nice low-risk way to get outside and move around a bit if you’re spending a week or two away from the bike.

For what it’s worth, I got back into running after years away from it towards the end of 2023 – it took me a couple of months of running consistently a few times each week just to not feel like my legs were going to break off after every run!! Some people definitely adjust more quickly than others – but jeez, I gotta say that running can be unforgiving at times!
