TrainingPeaks Virtual - [formerly, "Should TrainerRoad link up with IndieVelo"]

Ah, that’s an easy fix then! :+1:

Enjoy - it’s by far the best in terms of physics/realism I’ve ever tried

Any chance you’re on iOS? Trying to figure out if my issue is just me or a wider problem.

The ‘E’ key switches between erg modes. It can also be done in settings.

Route profiles are shown in the hub, or on the zommunique website (some may be missing)

The power zones bar shows time in zone. It changes as you ride and accumulate time in each zone.

There’s a wiki on the iV website, plus worth skim reading the historical changelogs

You can’t export to Garmin - that’s Garmin’s fault, they have refused to accept new connections from all 3rd parties for the last couple of years.

You can manually add the fitfile, or use a 3rd party tool like rungap.

No - MacOS. Mine was using the IndieVelo app and not the TrainingPeaks Virtual app. I figured the IndiVelo would auto update. But no

Thanks… working my way through the wiki over the next day or two. Trying to find how to switch erg/resistance on an Android tablet, though it’s not super-critical… 90%+ of the time I ride in erg, but it’s nice to know and use sometimes.

Well, that sucks. What is everyone’s favorite way to get TPV rides into the Garmin ecosystem automatically? Wouldn’t TP send to Garmin?

I tried adding a fitfile from yesterday manually, but Garmin Connect didn’t calculate training load, or update its load focus or anything like that, after I added the file manually. And that’s the part I care most about.

I do all of my indoor workouts in TrainerDay. I plan the workout in TrainingPeaks, and then it appears in TrainerDay (and Zwift) as the TP WoD. Once I’ve completed the workout, it automatically loads to RunGap and I use RunGap to send my completed workouts to Garmin Connect (and Strava as needed). You have to purchase the “swag bag” add-on and it will spoof your completed workouts to appear as if they were executed on the Tacx workout player, so that Garmin calculates the Training Load stuff. I think it costs $10 a year.

I know RunGap integrates with TP, but I don’t know if it will work with IndieVelo (TP Virtual). I can test this and let you know…as soon as I can get TPV to run on my iPad!

Yes I use rungap - it’s a bit fiddly to set up but once it is, it just works.

A more manual alternative is to use fitfiletools and change the device type to a Garmin device. Then Connect will calculate training load.

Garmin really need to sort that s**t out.

RunGap seems to be iOS-only. :grimacing:

@TimWKO, I normally wouldn’t ping you directly, but this seems like a question that will affect TONS of users and which is valuable to put on your radar. How can TP/TPV work together so that I can build a workout on TP, execute it on TPV, and it gets exported into the Garmin ecosystem automatically just as though I’d done it on Zwift?

TPV solves a major problem for me, allowing me to keep TP Premium forever instead of paying Zwift. But exporting to Garmin is important!

I can’t get it to run on my iPad or my MacBook, so if you’re an Apple user, don’t cancel that Zwift subscription just yet.

No worries on pinging me. I think TrainingPeaks is really investing in taking their game to the next level with a core focus on supporting the coaches that have been the backbone of their growth. The recent updates, the release of the new strength builder, the recruitment of new nutrition beta and now, the announcement of TPV really is focused on streamlining the coaching / training experience. I have been very impressed with these updates as a coach and excited about where they are going. For the specific question, I honestly do not know the plan but I do know that TrainingPeaks is 100% committed to being an open platform and allowing its users to select and share information from platforms of their choice. With that said, I think there is a fair amount of work to be done with developing the TPV platform to match their vision and have a feeling your questions will get answered sooner than later but will take a month or two for the dust to settle. I can pass on the importance of this connection to those in charge of the project. Sorry, wish I was more help.

I think that’s all the help I could have possibly asked for, thank you. Clear comments on what you know (and don’t), and passing on the word to someone in a better position to do something about it. :100:

I thought you were a key part of TP, given how I’ve seen you be “the face of WKO” and so heavily involved in their user-education efforts. But you speak of “they” not “we”. My mistake, sorry.

TPV exports to Garmin Connect when you complete a workout.

Could have sworn to you that Garmin Connect was not one of the options when I set that up on my Android tablet a few days ago. Will double-check!!

Just downloaded TPV to another tablet and set it up. Garmin Connect does show as one of the options for connected accounts, but it’s just a placeholder. If you click on it, you get:

“Garmin are not currently accepting new connections to automatically upload FIT files to Garmin Connect. You can however manually upload your FIT files from the following folder…”

No cigar, and no joy. :sob:

Since TrainingPeaks already has that connection open, we’ll have to wait for them to set it up.

At least for me, it runs fine on both my M1 Mac mini and M1 MacBook Pro. Maybe delete it completely and reinstall it?

I’m getting 60fps

Haha I never tried clicking it. When I click it (on PC) I just get this:

just a pity it doesnt work on the Apple TV

To be clear, TrainingPeaks do not already have that connection open. Garmin has made a commercial decision not to allow activities from third party devices / platforms to be accepted and considered for training load analysis. This is to force you in to their ecosystem. Use Hammerhead? No training load. Use wahoo? No training load. If they allowed TrainingPeaks activities, that would open it up to any device that can sync to TrainingPeaks, which is pretty much all of them.

Their official line is that they can’t ensure the integrity of the fit files and it could screw up the metrics, but that of course is BS. If you change the device to a Garmin one using fitfiletools, it works 100% of the time.

Garmin opened up the connection to Zwift and TrainerRoad, because these platforms were in no way competition, and did not add a benefit for competing devices. Based on this, it is possible that they could open up a sync directly from TPV (rather than from TP), but I wouldn’t hold my breath, and the issue is very much on the Garmin side not on the TPV one.

Nope. I’ve installed and uninstalled twice on both devices.
