Training time and exhaustion

A couple months ago I switched jobs and now sell cars. My schedule is rough with me working at least 51 hours a week and I also visit my elderly mother twice a week in the evenings. I do have Wednesdays and Sundays off to train and get the rest of life done. At 54 years old I’m finding it tough to work the 12 hour days and have the energy to get any kind of “productive” trainer workout in. Is there anyone out there that deals with the same thing? If so, how do you handle it?

55 here, and almost always work a 70-75 hour week. I used to train consistently at 4:45a-5:00a, doing 60 minute workouts. About a year ago, that became nearly impossible to keep going (after many years of it being just fine). Now, I’m getting on the trainer usually around 4:30pm each day for a 60-75 minute session and find it significantly easier. Generally, I aim for about 10 hours per week on the bike. Indoors 4-5 days per week, outdoors 1-2 days per week. FTP (265) and weight (140#) has remained steady for many years. (plateau city! I guess as long as I’m not getting slower, then it’s a ‘win’).

My sleep has always been terrible, so having a late afternoon workout couldn’t possibly make it any worse…

I’ve had some busier points in my training life, and for me at least, I found that getting my workouts done first thing in the morning was what worked best.

I’m very similar in that getting on the bike to train after a long day of work can be challenging… So, getting it done when I first woke up was the solution for me.

It can be tough at first, but one adjusts. It can be a nice way to start your day, too! As a bonus, you then don’t have to have the thought of doing a workout eating away at the back of your mind while you’re going about your day.
