Training for Cape Epic - how to increase volume in training plan over the next 4 months

Hi All,
Over the last 8-10 weeks I’ve built my training TSS to a around 400/450 per week (6 days with 3 days of intensity), and seeing great fitness improvement, back at 3.7 W/Kg and with a clear path to 4+, my minimum target for the event.
Overall TR is awesome and feel like I’m on track from a fitness perspective.
My concern is volume - the Cape Epic week in March '27 will be over 40hrs / 2000+ TSS on the bike :exploding_head: - therefore how do I build the volume into my plan. I need to be doing some back to back hard/long days over the coming months.
Any guidance on how to build the volume increase into my plan from week to week? And/Or incorporate a training camp style block?
Thanks,
Will

A couple blocks wouldn’t hurt as you grow into the plan, but the culumutive fatigue of the training handles it for you a bit already. I would throw in a good strong ‘peak week’ with lots of sweetspot w/surges and long zone2 w/some tempo/surges etc about a month or 3wks out with plenty of time left to shed the fatigue and still hit sharpening workouts.

Volume - TR doesn’t do a great job of building up time on bike, it focuses on building FTP and with that TSS doesn’t rises a ton (as ftp goes up, you can do more power/work for same TSS (is based on ftp)). You can use the plan volume checker option for suggestions.
But really best route is to just bump up some of your workouts to slowly add 15min longer, so if you are at hour workouts switch plan or most of the future workouts to 1:15 (or just add more warmup and long cooldown). Then stretch one of them to 1:30 etc. Likely you have a dynamic endurance ride Sunday maybe? If it isn’t adding much to that workout (often happens) to prioritize your hard interval days, you can manually add 30-60min to those long rides to get it to ‘long’ for you. It will be fatigue inducing if new to 4hr rides for instance… but after a few weeks it fatigue doesn’t linger quite as long.
Main thing is you want to do it slowly/progressively just like any of the plans do for intervals. Add a bit to each ride 45min zn2 becomes 50-55min… then 60’ etc. Great option is to add a block of solid duration and work right before a recovery week where the added fatigue won’t effect the workout in 2 days in the next week. Also with fatigued legs in week 3 of a block usually they are still fine to spin around at 50-70% as long as you fuel well!
Along those lines … if raising volume… make sure to be very mindful (aggressive) to fuel more, will encourage recovery and help maintain power in key workouts!
Alternative workout options, could also swap a Saturday workout out for a long endurance ride - or do a hard interval workout and then after tack on a couple hours zn2.
