TrainerRoad’s Biggest Update Ever Is Coming 👀

You would notice immediately, home page and calendar would like very different from what you are used to.

@Brany I looked and didn’t find an answer, will this be supported in the triathlon plans?

Good question. I think TR would argue that part of the value is using their suggested plan, ie it would be like hiring a coach and then building your calendar your own.

Having said that, go to Masters if your haven’t done that yet (2 hard days per week) and beyond that, follow the prescription, but just choose easier PLs of your not feeling it.

As outdoor unstructured workout data will now be taken account of which i a good thing it will likely overestimate my performance….my outdoor power data is significantly higher than indoor ( left sided power outdoor vs tacx neo indoor). I don’t use my good bike on the trainer and buying matching meters isn’t an option.

So should I just exclude these ooutdoor rides from trainerroad after the update?

Can you adjust the offset on the outside power meter?

Not sure its a quarq dub that came with the bike

You should be able to adjust the slope.

I’d love to be included in the beta given the slight delay for the final release - great thanks TR team !

You don’t just ask on the forum to be in the beta. There’s a beta sign up link that you have to use. And then you wait and hope that you get added. They already have a large number of beta testers, so they might not add more before launch.

Edit: as @kevistraining pointed out there’s a new link that allows you to request early access, whereas it was closed beta before. That probably means they are taking most people that request it.

There is a new early access form on the podcast thread….

Still nothing.

If there is any merit on the tech behind you shouldn’t. TR likes to drive home on the aspect that your indoor power = ftp = RPE shouldn’t be different to outdoors if you do it right, use a dozen Lasco-Fans, just try hard enough or basically ride so rarely outside that actually yes, you lose power outside and then it’s equal to inside (I’m kidding with the last one and only with the last one) but that is not what the majority of cyclists experience.

And this is also no new topic. E.g. here Lipski et al wrote something about it: Differences in Performance Assessments Conducted Indoors and Outdoors in Professional Cyclists - PubMed
There are other sources, coaches and broadly a range of very good software (like intervals.icu) which readly use and automatically sets ftp for outdoor vs indoor riding.
Sadly, TR never wanted to hear about being able to use different FTP settings for prescribing indoor vs outdoor workouts or to have a correct CTL etc.

If their AI is worth any salt it must detect and use this and other signals when assessing the workout history (and ongoing workouts) of any given athlete. If not - I wouldn’t even try to exclude outdoor rides but excluding the use of any information and plan coming from the system.

Update:

I used your AI FTP prediction feature to analyze whether or not my two-a-days were doing me any good, aaaand… they’re not! Turns out that filling all of my available training windows with training does not (surprise surprise) lead me to be the strongest rider I can be. I’ve also been wondering whether or not I could benefit from some very long endurance rides. Don’t have to worry about that anymore, either because it’s not going to help. Perhaps pushing the FTP prediction farther out in time will result in a different conclusion, but then the Monte Carlo dispersion explodes, so that may not be helpful.

I have to say @Nate_Pearson that this new release has completely blown me away with how good of a product it is. I’ve never had more confidence in my training plan. I’m getting hours of my life back AND better expected results. To me there is no way that a coach can provide a better service than TR unless they fully utilize TR.

Thanks for thinking bigger and delivering.

Totally agree!

Can you define “very long endurance rides”? And what type of events are you targeting? (If you’re racing 8+ hour gravel/mtb events there is surely a benefit to putting in some extended saddle time.. even if it isn’t FTP related)

Fitness is not measured solely by FTP. I increased my weekly hours from 12 to 20+ and it made a huge difference, even though my FTP stayed about the same. I went from being dropped off the front group to podium. My durability went way up!

20+ hours a week, dang…I’m happy if I can just get in 8-10 hours per week

Yeah, I agree. I don’t have the time or bandwidth to do the big gravel races I have done in the past.

My target event this year is 2.5hr with a 30 min and two 20 min climbs, perfect for maximizing TRs FTP.

I bet Nate has considered projecting max power for multiple durations (i.e. 4hours+), which may prove long endurance rides helpful for many disciplines.

I’m also not 100% convinced as I mentioned in my post that long duration endurance rides won’t ultimately be beneficial for even shorter efforts in the long term, but for me, it’s definitely not worth taking time away from other parts of my life for such an unknown.

I suspect that many of you, like me, are both cyclists and guitarists. For the past four years or so, most of my amplification needs have been handled by digital units from Fractal Audio, whose responsiveness to customer feedback (and hence customer loyalty) is truly exemplary.

When Fractal produces a new beta version of their firmware, they post it (clearly identified as beta) on the Fractal Forum for all to download. As the beta version gets refined, in part through feedback on the forum, new updated beta versions appear, until finally there comes a full release. Some users download the first beta, some wait for a second or third, many only download the full release.

The result is that the user always feels in control and never suffers from the FOMO that has plagued this promotion campaign and (eventual) release. I don’t know whether this model is technically feasible for TR. If it is, I’d strongly urge the team to look into Fractal’s approach for future releases.
