TrainerRoad on Strava or keep it on the down-low?

I have 99% of my Strava rides marked as ‘private’. To be fair, I have complicated and antagonistic relationship with Strava. In a nutshell, I think it encourages a lot of cyclists to become jackasses who simply chase medals and trophies (not all cyclists, but certainly a lot of them).

I too found that Strava was also a catalyst for being my worst possible ‘self’ while on the bike. Nothing mattered except that damn computer on my stem. When I finally disconnected from Strava, dumped all my followers and set my full history to ‘private’, a funny thing happened: I started to enjoy riding my bike again. I was generally more pleasant on group rides, and actually put out longer sustained efforts than small ‘segment-to-segment’ sprint stuff.

I’m an outlier on this topic, but I’d be perfectly happy if Strava just went away entirely.

Everything goes to Strava, public. Could not care less if people don’t like seeing trainer rides. It’s all for me anyway.

If you do push it to Strava and keep it public it helps us.

TR is more popular than people think, and Strava activities just help reenforce that people use it.

But, it’s totally up to you (obviously) and I think there are legit reasons not to share.

I only know 1 person who rides, so I’m immune from that sort of judgement. My social circle is also very limited so that also helps in a way

Strange people around Strava… I get ‘kudos’ (thumbs up) from people instead when TR trainings upload. I wouldn’t care too much about who and what. Just train and follow your improvements. Social is turning into a chronical disease!!!

I started using Trainer Road because of all those Strava uploads. I never had a smart trainer, went and bought one just to do Trainer Road structured training. I have improved my overall performance. I am not a racer, just a cyclist who wanted to go faster.

I also upload nearly everything for the purpose of having a training retrospective and log.

Everything on Strava, public

If someone wants to go through the trouble of stalking my training and power numbers to get competitive info then more power to them.

I get a kick out of the people who are anti-trainer commenting on rides negatively - let them do their own thing

In the early days I was a Strava Premium subscriber but canceled it a few years ago after realising that there was no development going on. Such a shame, they’ve got so many opportunities for growth and improvement. Everyone on two wheels has a Strava account.

I am developing in the same direction like you, just after buying a bike with a power meter and being so concerned about my FTP and all the numbers. I downgraded my Strava account because they don’t innovate and push the platform forward. The recent decision to block Relive to use their API also reveals their a*hole management. Nonetheless I found several riding buddies on Strava and am constantly learning about new routes in my area, which is a big plus in my opinion. I wish they would push the platform in a social-platform-direction and just leave all the rest to third parties. I realise not many people think this way but for me Strava is nothing more than a fb/instagram for cyclists.

Actually I suspect you’re in a majority. I don’t know anybody who uses it as a serious training tool, but it’s fun for sharing and seeing what friends and team mates are up to, good for discovering new routes, and makes for a nice technology agnostic hub for all your rides regardless of how they were recorded.

I push everything to Strava for two reasons:

  1. Comprehensive Training log for all my training. I don’t like training peaks. Strava is more simple.
  2. I find that posting my TR training has a reverse phycological affect on a lot of the people people I race. When I show up to a group ride (especially with climbing), or a race, everyone around me knows that I’m a structured training rider, and they say, “uh oh… we’re in trouble now.” I’ve already beat most of them before I even take my first attack. (Muwahahahahaha)

TR has helped me become a faster cyclist and I like to return the favor to them by sharing the workouts i do in a public space. This has driven lots of conversations with folks on what TR is because they see it on my feed - many of them have then gone to sign up. This gets the user base larger and then TR creates more cool features like the calendar, analysis and outdoor workouts. These, in turn, make me faster and then people ask “how are you getting so much faster???”. This then drives conversations with folks on what TR is because they want to get faster - many of them go on to sign up. This gets the user base larger and then TR creates even more features (i dont know whats next but i am confident it is awesome!!!) that will help me get faster…

I downloaded all 10 years of my Strava history and uploaded to the TrainingPeaks. I want one repository for my data and Strava has become too expensive/annoying to use it for that anymore. Since I also use WKO TP seemed to be a good compromise. I can’t use TR for this because it doesn’t have direct connections to all of my data sources.

Does strava include your total K’s ridden on a year the TR workouts that you upload and then set to private?
