TrainerRoad on Strava or keep it on the down-low?

The core people I follow and who follow me all do at least some indoor training so I post all my rides as they do theirs. Teammates are pretty aware of what everyone is doing which is motivational, and even more so in the dark lonely indoor days of winter. Sure, the epic outdoor rides with fun pictures and clever titles get way more kudos than random TR rides but I find it motivational to have my training public. On some dark days, not having a blank day on my Strava feed or worse, an early quit, is the only thing that keeps me going!

With the caveat, I’m not racing, I find the strava uploads keep me honest - stop me bailing or reducing intensity. Plus, advertising for the platform!

Only TR rides I’ve set to private have been (disappointing) ramp tests!

I used my frenemy’s TR ramp test he posted on Strava as motivation to push me through workouts working towards our next race. It worked to push me and served as great motivater. So I never wanted to be that motivation for others I race against who I follow/following me on Strava. So I only post outdoor rides. Also, nobody wants their feed filled with trainer workouts.

i push just to keep everything in sync.

as for people complaining about seeing trainer rides or that you’re not out on a nice sunny day, it’s hard to hear the haters when they’ve been dropped.

I prefer it to seeing other peoples outdoor rides on good weather (or any?) days I’m in work! :grinning:

I’m another push to Strava but they are marked as private. No need to give away my secrets…

Not only is my Strava set to private, I don’t follow anyone and don’t allow anyone to follow me.

Strava is a necessary evil to connect to other apps and that’s it for me.:upside_down_face:

I like seeing everything on Strava. If I’m not willing to see everything someone does, I don’t follow them. And other than a few pros, I only follow people I know.

So, bring on the 1.7 mile ice cream rides with the kids and the commutes along with the training rides and races and the occasional walks, paddle board outings and vacation hikes. And, yes, the indoor trainer sessions too. All together, it paints a pretty picture of what my friends and acquaintances are doing for fun and fitness.

Haha - this is exactly me. The thought that everyone can see that I’ve bailed on a session is what stops me from bailing or reducing the intensity.

The only private rides I have on Strava are my (many) failed ramp tests!

I post everything on Strava so that I have a record. It’s all public because I don’t care if people look or not. I even post hikes and walks with the dog. I figure if people get annoyed then they can just stop looking.

Over two years ago reported a bug with a local segment along a canal, one that is completely flat. That flat segment is still listed as 8% climb over 0.7 miles. Its been acknowledged several times by Strava support, and yet they can’t remove it or fix it. Strava is a mess. I’ll never send them my hard earned money.

I dislike seeing ā€œsponsoredā€ on my training rides and therefore make them private. I pay for the service and choose to advertise or not. I don’t mind supporting something that works, I refer plenty to TR and praise the platform any chance I get. I also feel the same about everything though, be it bike, truck etc. If I could easily peel the stickers off my bike and truck, I would.

When you switch a private ride to public do you also get to see its flyby? My Strava is completely private but I do miss sometimes being able to see the flyby. I already tried to switch some rides to public but the flyby option never shows up.

I quite like seeing other TR rides in my feed. I’ll sometimes swap notes and tips on the workouts in the comments.

I keep commutes and things like race warm-ups private, but only because I’d keep getting notifications on kudos for a 3 mile amble from a station to race HQ, and get no kudos on the actual race…

Thank you! I much prefer that.

I do a lot of indoor workouts like most here and it use to get under my skin those 100% outdoor followers who don’t recognise indoor workouts with a friendly kudos, but will acknowledge and load 10 min warm-ups, 10 min cool downs, one for each TT leg (anyone heard of a lap button) , the post coffee ride home, and oh the song and dance they make if they ever do an inside workout

So i unfollowed both ways and the problem was solved!

that’s a good one. had someone upload a workout with every single interval as a separate ride :upside_down_face:

  • yes, that works to access Flybys.

You are glad you are not on my wifes follower as when I set her garmin 735xt up to do a ā€œbrickā€ workout with running and then strength so everytime she goes go orange theory she presses the button when switching from run to row back to run to strength, etc (you get it).

Lets say when it gets uploaded it comes over to Strava like a triathlon (per mini activity) and there can be 5 to 40 depending on the workout. It comes over to garmin connect fine and she wanted this so she can track her running miles and paces. Strava handling of these files is just annoying.
