TrainerRoad Ads in Forum

I’m tough. If I can take a hard workout I can survive exposure to an ad for a product I use and like. Carry on.

It’s really not a huge deal for me either way, this forum is a great service and you guys definitely have every right to do this. BUT… I don’t see why you couldn’t have waited to get that solution in place first.

As I posted yesterday, banner ads were tried out back in 2020 and back then Nate suggested solutions were being investigated to not show ads to subscribers. Then the banner ads were pulled.

Why bring the ads back 4.5 years later without already having this solved?

The AI chat ppg code computer says it was fixed. It has learned to say a nice answer to save its job.
Browser tricks “-site:Amazon” kills those results

This is the way. When people show me a recipe page on their phone using safari im always reminded how much I love Brave

Hoping this can also be applied to the marketing emails I’ve been getting lately also. Being a paid subscriber I don’t think I’m the target audience…

An easy interim solution would be to switch off ads for people who are logged into the forums (i. e. forum members who are likely subscribers).

You can start by deselecting the following setting in your TR Account page, if it’s not already done.

Given that you have such a tolerant attitude to discussion of your competitor’s products on your forum I think it is entirely reasonable that you advertise TR on your own forum.

I problem for me either, don’t mind it at all. I hope you won’t turn into next YouTube type of adds thing

Love it. Instagram TR ad plus the podcast is why I signed up. My first few months I didn’t actually use TR. just felt bad I getting value from all the free content. Back in the food ole days this was a Facebook page.

Yeah, and I think this is the “genius” of TR’s marketing: make a good product that a lot of people like, and they will tell others.

The way they moderate this forum is another strength: you have literal competitors explaining their products here. Imagine if you were on Wahoo’s forums and wanted a discussion on how the new Garmin x40-series head units work. It shows that they have confidence in their product.

That’s why I think those banner ads are just a bad idea, because they cheapen TR’s brand and detract from word-of-mouth marketing.

Only if I also don’t want educational and product update emails, which is not the case…

Agree to disagree. The biggest problem I see is I’m old. The copy is too small.

I also don’t think anyone will be canceling over a banner ad. They either grow or charge more from the same user base. Jacking the price will likely cause more churn than a banner ad.

Further, if you don’t want to see it block it.

Works on iOS as well.

Perhaps worth an email to them requesting that they segregated those options to discreet choices vs the singular one then.

Its not an issue to me either (I havnt really noticed the adds before reading this topic… Now I’ve noticed them  but the post above from OreoCookie makes sense to me. Just dont think the adds here will have an effect on subscriptions but the content of the topics yes those are the best publicity :top:

I’m normally all for TR doing whatever it needs to do to increase revenue and not be shy about it.

But I agree that the forum is itself an ad, so the banner is redundant.

That said, run the banners for a few months and let the conversion metrics make the decision for you.

From a marketing perspective, the forum is not an ad. The forum is the top of a conversion funnel, and most non-users will need a bit of a nudge to move further down the funnel toward conversion. Also, from a content marketing perspective, I’d guess that the forum has a lower conversion rate than the older blog posts*, again bolstering the notion that ads could be beneficial, if done properly.

*The newer blog posts are much more like ads as they explicitly tout the solutions that TR provides.

How about running a few Strava ads?
You know, to support the ecosystem… :person_shrugging:

The forum maybe the ad, however, it still needs to get you to the sign up section so a single banner that takes you there makes sense. The forum with it’s combination of great information and community sells the TR ethos of getting fast (or at least less slow) this just points prospective accolytes in the right direction.

It’s definitely less intrusive than I’ve seen on other services.

Seems as though paid users should be able to dismiss them. Either by clicking dismiss takes you to calendar and sets a…. Cookie. Tie the active paid user and forum accounts together. Little ai and key value pairs? I don’t know but I’m
With you if they convert go for it. I imagine adapting every ride isn’t inexpensive.
