TR Running Thread 2023

:trophy: Got a lottery entry to the NYC Half Marathon on March 17. Yay!

Anyone else running that?

Yeah. I had a 4 of 6 guaranteed entry so I entered. Remains to be seen if I train seriously for it. Not feeling it so far.

I’ll second the add an extra layer if your hands or feet are cold. I work outdoors all winter, often with wet gloves. I’ll combat it by wearing about 6 layers on my body.

Ironman Matt Hanson going for a blazing fast time at CIM today, I think? It will be interesting to see how a top ironman triathlon runner can do at a marathon if he spends a little bit of time just focusing on that discipline. I’ll be hitting the reload button on his tracking today, anyhow…

I saw that he was going for OTQ which I didn’t think was possible. Why? USA Men’s OTQ is 2:18:00. His best Ironman marathon is 2:34:32. Pros like him aren’t running their ironman marathon that much slower than a standalone effort, while an age grouper will have a bigger difference in triathlon vs standalone. So, I didn’t expect that he could drop 16-17min.

In the end, he ran 2:22:57 at CIM which is still a massive PR! No idea how much focus he really put into this effort, but to be able to drop another 5min :person_shrugging:

If I can do it, you can do it! Train hard, but have fun with it! It’ll be an amazing experience.

You’ll be fine… you just need to train…

And not get injured. Consistency wins the day.

I mean I got myself into this voluntarily… but I kinda expected to not get picked and then go for Valencia instead, with a little more time to prepare.
Regardless, I now have my work cut out.
Progress is slow, and the running I do is a little boring. Getting the hip sturdy, and the ankles to hold up at higher pace is frustratingly difficult. I know I’ve only been running for 2 months now, but I can now really see how much adapting running requires.
I have yet to run into the red cardio vascular wise.

You are doing the right things…

You want to keep it easy and maybe do some faster things now that you have been running for a bit… strides are a great tool and should be added to the end of most easy, short runs.
Fartleks are also fun and probably a great way to run fast and not over do it.

best of luck with training

After the YouTube algorithm fed me a number of lactate videos I couldnt help myself and bought a Lactate Plus meter. Just came in so I tested this morning. Which turns out, can get a bit tricky doing it on your own once you’re sweaty… which meant I was forced to take a few samples at times. Still, I feel I managed to take mostly good/valid readings. One exception being at the 12th interval where lactate decreased.

Anyway, would be interesting to hear others opinion on the results. My inexperienced opinion tells me I have a decent aerobic foundation.

LT1 7:53 min/mi (7.6 mph) and 139 BPM
LT2 6:22 min/mi (9.4 mph) and 157 BPM

This is my second time testing. The time was at a local tri shop back in spring of 2022 where they estimated my threshold at 150 BPM. Based on the values from that test it seems my LT1/LT2 have since improved.

BPM <130 Aerobic Recovery
BPM 130-149 Aerobic Endurance
BPM 150-165 Lactate Threshold/VO2
BPM > 165 Anaerobic capacity

Does anyone has protein recommendations?

I recently start lifting and was recommended to start taking protein shakes. I haven’t lift in many years and have no idea if I should do proteins while also training for a marathon.

Thanks in advance.

I’ll see you there!

Apologies if this has been covered before. I got into cycling as a form of cross training for my running when I was injured. I didn’t enjoy cycling, partly because when I was on the bike, it meant that I wasn’t able to run. Running was my priority. Fast forward a few years to getting a new bike, etc. and now I hardly run.

My daughter just finished her first marathon, which somewhat lit my fire to possibly run another marathon next year and come out of retirement from running. I’ve completed many marathons in the past and I’m now 54 years old. 10 years ago, I was still flirting with 3:00 marathon time off of 40miles per week/64k. To make it simple, I want to become a good runner again, but I don’t want to give up cycling. I’d like to mix the two sports (no swimming). I don’t have aspirations of running sub 3:00, but I also don’t want to just finish. Yes, I’m competitive.

As a former coach and Dad of a collegiate female runner, we’ve seen our share of injuries. I recently listened to a podcast of Parker Valby, US NCAA XC champ (running). Her body broke down continuously at higher mileage. The fix: she now runs only 3x a week, but cross trains on other days and sometimes does double cross training days. The cross training is intense on elliptical/swimming. She just ran 14:56 indoor 5k. I’ve heard of many other high level collegiate women adopting a similar approach with good results.

So here is the question: Have any of you had success in the marathon while combining cycling/running. I have about 12 hours to train a week. During marathon training, of course, running would be my priority, but could cycling be my cross training, similar to the example above. What would a typical week look like?

Thanks

yep - ran 2:48 in 2016 at VLM on 35 miles/week of running and 2x weights sessions and 6 hours/week of winter turbo training. Run was 3 x week - 1x 20-22 mile long run every fortnight, 1 x 8 mile tempo run and one short easy run, When I didn’t do the long easy run I did 16 miles with about 10 miles@MP or 18 miles with the last 3@MP. Was amazed how good I felt as my pb is only 2:47 …it was also my only negative split - I was worried about lack of miles so I focused on running each 5k in 20mins. Ended up running the last 5 in about 19 mins…that said I did have a big background in marathon running for a decade previously so that obviously helped!

Last year I trained for 4 months off a half ironman block and was able to pull a 3.12 marathon. I am slightly younger than you 44 tho.

It can be done, you would need to prioritize running over cycling. Your will probably sacrifice some ftp, but you will retain or even gain fitness.

I was doing about 40 miles per week, with 1 long run, which maxed out at 21 miles, and 1 track or tempo sessions per week. 5 days of running and 2 of cycling… One bike session was wo, the other was longer endurance ride… It can be done

Best of luck on your training!

Plus you are talented AF!

Thanks for the input! I’ll put together a plan based on the above.

@Joelrivera when I added protein shakes and started tracking my my macros my weight dropped significantly. My fitness and my races results improved also.
