TR Running Thread 2021

Thought the was a bit interesting to share… Bought these shoes at the same time but used each exclusively either in/out-doors. The outdoor shoe has 342 mi compared to 492 mi for the indoor shoe.

The outdoor shoe definitely feels like its less responsive and has less give but could get a few more miles out of it… Though I’ll likely just retire and use as walk-around shoes. They look pretty good after the wash.

The indoor shoe feels like I could get a few hundred miles either in or outdoors. I’ll probably keep indoors for another 100-200 miles before I retiree to walk-arounds.

Thanks, there are a variety of zoning systems available but I was looking more specifically for research on what benefit from what heart rate.

I’m using a system already that gives me 135 bottom end 150 top end, aerobic.

Running seems to be going well for me, while my training focus is on strength. 4 easy runs last week, 2h44m running, 3h12m last week.

Did some reading on the LetsRun training forum, but either I don’t understand running at all or they’re talking a lot of nonsense.

Listened to MTA and That Triathlon Show, and far too may youtube clips from The Run Experience, VO2max Productions and so on.

All in all I think I’m making running far too complicated, I need to have confidence in my plan, relax and simply run….it’s looking like this:

M Lift heavy am, pm Run short 130bpm
T pm Run long 145bpm
W Lift heavy am, Run short 130bpm
T pm Run medium 140bpm
F Lift heavy am, pm Run short 130bpm
S
S Optional run

There’s bikes and swims weaved in there if I can be bothered too but all easy stuff.

I’ve settled into this format… I don’t want to over think it, I’m running at a conversational/all day pace, my simplistic approach at the moment is “consistency is key” and supplementing it with TR workouts for two reason, less impact on body than running alone, (only 5 days on feet) and I like to keep my FTP at a decent level for those occasional bike rides. Seems to be working.

Also swapping my footwear, like to keep my foot strength with the five fingers but as it’s getting cold and wet and requirements to wear better footwear in events, I’m swapping in my Altras for the long days. Closely monitoring my knees with heavier stuff on feet, nothing to report yet on them… Have noticed a little hip ache for a couple of hours post running since using Altras on long days Achillies, calves seems to have all settled down now.

Last 4 weeks I was doing approximately 5 hrs running and a couple biking.

This November, one week in, I’m aiming to do 50km/6 hours a week running and still 2 hours on bike.

It feels so good to finally start feeling a sense of running fitness coming back…

Last week did 4 miles at tempo… Goal was 650 to 655 mpm pace. Did 646. I was very happy with it (i should say i had a friend running with me, and since he much faster than I am he was kind of setting the pace for me).

Today i did 5x1k, goal was 6 to 615… They were 605 and one was flat 6. Again… Very happy with this.

Weather has been great lately down in Florida. So that’s has lead to good all around running… Will see how far does this goes

I think I have had my most consistent running in a very long time. I am running between 3-4 times a week, depending on the puppy…really. For October I managed to increase my running from 1.5 hours to just over 2 hours, 6 mi to 10 mi…and yes for those doing math (@Joelrivera ) it is very slow pace. But…I do feel the runs are getting easier at least from an RPE standpoint. All runs I throw in some type of strides or hill repeats. Current trend is in the right direction. Also doing 2-3 three polarized plan Trainerroad rides and it is weaving in very well.

Baby steps…
Just remember the aerobic engine is there…
Just need to get your body recognize you are capable of running fast!

Which treadmill apps are there that can track running speed like Trainerroad with power? I know zwift does it but I would like an alternative. If Trainerroad could have virtual running speed that would be amazing. But I think they are correctly putting all their effort into building adaptive training for cycling.

8 mile run today with 8x20s All out sprints. Feeling good.
The sprints really do a good job of feeling your body tautness as you run.

I think i read a while ago that Zwift was working on something to control treadmills, similar to resistant on bike trainers to simulate elevation, but for running. But so far I havent seen anything of the sort…

I don’t believe this is going to happen. I don’t think Zwift is really going to do much more with running than it already does as it just isn’t revenue generating. There is also a liability aspect of adjusting incline and speed. iFit does this with a number of treadmills but as far as I know they only do it where iFit is “built into” the treadmill (on a screen attached to the treadmill).

Yeah, this will never happen for safety reasons.

Do you have a watch that can track running? If so one of the cheap garmin footpods paired to your device might be the simplest option.

Rouvy does it similar to Zwift but with video, I use Zwift Run mostly though. Garmin 945/Fenix 6 has a treadmill setting which you can true up at the end if the distance was incorrectly recorded.

I use the RunCline iPhone app to transmit treadmill speed to Zwift but it also generates a .fit file you can import into another system ike TrainingPeaks or something.

Another successfull run… at least according to me…
Garmin think I am unproductive…
Intervals.icu at least put me flat from a day off yesterday…so who knows…

In any case… 4x600, 4x400, 4x200 all on target (5:55 to 6:00 mpm)
last 200 was 34 (“racing” a buddy who didn’t want me to pass him on the track, he did 31 on that 200)

overall happy with this… although all “numbers” suggest I sucked today

Thoughts on Down Hill Marathons…

It really irritates me (for no good reason really) when I see someone all exited about a BQ and when I go to strava I see the race start at almost 7k feet and end at 2k feet. Almost 5k feet of elevation lose.
To me thats even worse than carbon fiber plated shoes.
Boston should not allowed people to BQ on races like this. Its unfair for people who can’t afford going to a huge downhill race.
Boston should put a limit on how much elevation could you lose on a race…

anyway…rant over.

4.5hrs running last week so probably my longest time on feet week, but still moderate distance as it’s all shuffle-pace low HR stuff.

But Boston is a downhill Marathon and WR cant be recorded there…just saying. And yes there a recouple of hills - I used to live a block from the course.

not really…

The course has 891 feet of elevation gain, though in the aggregate it’s downhill. Notes on a few particular sections:

Looks downhill… but not really…

Now… the races I am talking about are BS like this…

REVEL Big Bear.

elevation drop of 4200!!!

IMO any time you compare times across different events there’s going to be a level of unfairness. Even if everyone was running the exact same course profile you still have some pretty dramatic weather differences, especially when the entrance pool is pretty global.

Definitely in the ‘it sucks’ basket and they could/should remove some big outliers, but practically speaking I’m not sure there’s much more they can do beyond ensuring accurate course measurement.
