TR AI Updates + Q&A With Nate | Ask a Cycling Coach Podcast 573

Great episode. Thanks for taking all the time to explain changes. FWIW, I have no complaints with any of the updates and changes. While, it’s made me tweak a few things in “other” apps and platforms, I feel like everything you are doing makes sense. I have a 5-day stage ride (not race) in July and am trusting you to program my training. Cheers!!!

I’m loving the new update and don’t mind the new way FTP is used. Its just a training number, and thats fine by me

However I would love to have a prediction of max power in 20 and 60 minutes segments, simply because thats what I and many others use to pace (in Ironman triathlons its very common to plan the bike leg by aiming for a target TSS).

i know you touched briefly on triathlon plans and how new AI does not adapt swim/run. Could you include more in depth coverage of triathlon plans and what is/is not included in Fatigue Detection?

Ex - Run Intensity is not factored in, correct? Or is it factored in only as described in the given workout? If we adapt the workout, it cannot see that? Or are all swim/runs given X amount of a fatigue based only on time?

Does this help?

Has there been a discussion from the TR team regarding the change in approach to rest week? I’ve listened to the latest podcasts and have been trying to keep up with the forum, but may have missed it.

Otherwise, I am curious if anyone from the beta can share their experiences after adhering to the higher relative load compared to before.

I’m not against more activity and I don’t have any entrenched belief system about the rest week, just curious to learn more about why the change was made. I’m assuming the team decided based on outcomes from the AI model?

I noticed the increase in intensity of the de-load weeks too.

It certainly doesnt apear to have done me any harm - I’ve just done a de-load week and I feel ready for my next week of intensity/

Fitness inproving nicely :+1:

I think it could be renamed “No/low Intensity Week” as the rides are not “recovery” rides as such.

There was, but for the life of me I can’t find it.

Think it was this one where Jonathan wondered if they should be called “endurance weeks”?

Not releated directly to the new AI changes though….

I THINK it was Nate and Jonathan. I’m hoping one of the mods will have more info when they start reading this morning.

Riding recovery at endurance (z2) hurts you, it doesn’t help. Ride the recovery at the prescribed watts. If you want to add Z2 after the workout, you can do that. Going harder doesn’t make you faster. Be consistent, nailing your workouts, and nailing recovery makes you faster. It’s natural to want to go harder and longer, thinking that’s better. What the new TR model shows us is that maxing out isn’t always better.

Just submitted this question to the to the Ask a Cycling Coach podcast, but thought I’d throw it out here for any thoughts/discussion:

While TrainerRoad AI is currently picking the “right” workout from the library of existing workouts, is the plan for TrainerRoad AI to eventually become/utilize the “Workout Creator” to create the “right” workout every time? This level of nuance and precision by TrainerRoad AI to have the ability to create workouts for each individual seems like the next logical progression.

I remember that also. But it was pretty short and I’d also like a bit more information about the change and the reasoning behind it.

Here is Nate’s short answer (expand all of it) including my question that was similar to yours:

Just adding my thoughts as a LONG time TR user:
Nate kinda poked at this…..and I just wanted to say I agree: Some way to compare my previous training to now would be helpful. Lots of discussion about how AI doesn’t use FTP, fine… but is my FTP this year comparable to last year? 3 years ago? 5 years ago?

As the preferred method of generating FTP has changed, how do I compare my fitness now vs say 3 years ago at the same time? I think Nate talked about the idea of being able to recalculate your old FTPs, and/or show your current FTP calculated from previous methods.

How about a third curve in the new workout power curve UI that shows previous year including a “season match” switch. That would offer a quick comparison to previous year training.

Yes, but I’d find it more elegant to have previous year with season match as a 2. benchmark in the new workout power curve UI on top of the last 6 weeks.

It sure is. I love it. Although it’s depressing!

Watched this and previous Nate’s podcasts and just wanted to sum up:
Is there still sence in looking at progression levels now when choosing alternate workouts from AI recommended? So if I have Threashold O/U 3.0 scheduled and see workout alternate with 2.8 or 2.6 I can pick it not being afraid of gaining less FTP increase later? Same for longer/shorter?
And vice versa: if I see alternate with 3.5 I should not be scared to choose it because it will be similar to original 3.0 prescribed by AI in terms of power/effort?

Hey @Brian_Nicholson1  Is this the app or web and what device?

Hello Caro,

I use my laptop to do my workouts and it was on the app, I also checked the website version after to see but it was the same.
