That’s me. Back after a few years to TR. I absolutely love the new AI system and other improvements like Zwift integration. Perfect for me to maximize fitness given available time. The FTP prediction for me is a nice motivator and measure of progress, but I don’t wrap my ego around it and accept Nate’s guidance that it’s all about the power curve. I love that the TR continues to work improvements and cares about and listens to its customer base. Respect to those who are passionate about specific changes, but for me as a sort of newbie I’m really happy with TR.
Oooo… just saw this. On my way. ![]()
BTW @jonathan, is this meant to be 574? Your last one with Alex Larson last week was also 573.
Great changes
Really happy with my progress. Multi year TR user
Looking forward to what I can accomplish on the next 3 years with TR
Hello Trainer Road,
I would love your help @Jonathan I did have my questions answered through providing a ticket number related to new AI update recently which was greatly appreciated. I have continued to follow the training plan (with huge scepticism) and just don’t see how it could possibly be correct. Viewing this podcast has only increased my frustration. Please, please help ![]()
All my training is so easy, I feel it’s a waste of time. The training plan is giving me easy after easy after easy (moderate) workouts. There is no progressive overload and all I’m doing is de-training. The new graph Power Records graph confirms my suspicion that everything is too easy (ignoring FTP which dropped 17 watts with update). Here are some screenshots. V02 max workout.
I get a new FTP this week (which is back to what it was before update (which is what it was before I completed my previous full training block)). First training after FTP is Thresholds Under and Overs. The graph:
Again, closest point is still ~-46w under.
This trend continues with all other workouts.
I can see that these lines will come closer together as time passes as my Last 6 Week NP will be LESS as I have de-trained! This will take every workout since the update to future update with NO progressive overload.
As FTP “doesn’t matter” and if I change it, it will make no difference to the workouts, what can I do to make the workouts harder (it would be lovely to actually fail a workout because of the level of difficulty).
Thanks for your time and looking into this for me. Appreciated.
One thing I’m unsure of with the AI system if, based on the fact that it doesn’t know your ftp, why, if I have a specific workout and a specific wattage, and I accept the new FTP, the wattage changes for the same workout? If FTP doesn’t matter, shouldn’t it stay the same?
Also, my 2c on the need for an FTP, trainer road might not need it, but it helps managing efforts when not riding on TrainerRoad.
You are marking all workouts easy then the AI should be increasing the difficulty level
Do you have yellow days on your plan? I got better outcomes when I modified my plan to avoid all yellow days which seemed to be slightly suppressing the difficulty of my harder days. I went from training 6 days a week to 4 (12 hours to 8) and have been really happy with my training progress since - minimum effective dose.
Yeah mate, I have a few yellow days. These are from when I’ve done a TR workout outdoors and I have added extras at the end as it’s been too easy (based of RPE, Power and HR). I either only do something super easy on a yellow day (<30 tss) or nothing as a recovery. Only once in the last 3 months have I done something harder (group ride) on a yellow day. I then get a red day so I do nothing until it tells me I’m good to go and it tells me what to do.
First workout screenshot if for two days away. 17/02/2026.
Cheers
FTP “doesn’t matter” as it’s been said, refers to the AI picking workouts and your training plan progression. The AI is doing so off of raw watts/power. However, the FTP will matter if you manual change it and manually pick workouts. Also, I believe in certain training zones and certain workouts (ie over unders) it does actually matter because it’s restricted within the available workouts.
What’s your structured training history with (and without) TR like? What I’m curious about is what rides are contributing to your higher 6 week power curve - assuming it is your 6 week curve, as that’s the default. Do you have outside (unstructured) rides contributing, maybe with a different power source?
Good point. @cwatt63 what is the orange line? Is it last 6 weeks? If not, could you compare to last 6 weeks…I assume that last 6 weeks is the base of workout selection. If that’s the case and you’ll get no answer, then please tag Jonathan, Eddie or Caro to raise awareness.
If you see it’s too easy then just manually pick a workout from the “Harder” tab to drive the progression faster.
Just to confirm you are showing your power from the ride and from the last six weeks? Not a custom time frame?
Can you make your profile public or share your TSS chart and your last 4 weeks of training.
This will be a bit of work but what if you compare what the next workout power numbers would have been at your old FTP and raise the intensity of your next workout by that amount.
Say Mills at 367 FTP the intervals should start at 440 watts. I think from your AIFTP of 350 just start adding 5% intensity to your next workout and see how it feels.
I hope that I got the number right, 17 watt drop after update.
If it start feeling proper hard then you know that you’re heading in the right direction and you’re also giving the system some good data.
This should help the AI adapt swiftly.
Haven’t been loving it honestly. Started with a 320 something prediction (great, near peak levels) and it’s come down to about 312 over 20 days. I hit all my main workouts, sometimes skip endurance for recovery for other activities (yoga, weights). The Nail in the coffin was today when I skipped 10 mins endurance tacked onto an over under workout. Fatigued from a very taxing vinyasa class yesterday. It dropped me all the way back to 303, my starting point. Make that make sense? I over rode to 312 and I I’ll complete my block and revisit I guess.
Hello,
Structured training history: only with TR. ~6 months. Just ride around with my mates for something to do before that.
Power Curve: Yes, 6 week default.
Outside rides are usually structured TR workouts sent to Garmin. Different bike = different power metre (compassion efforts place the different power metres very close). 95% of training in the last 10 weeks have been all with the same bike/same power metre. Group rides only done on endurance day keeping in zone 2 majority of the time.
Thanks.
Hi,
Last 6 weeks as default. No custom.
Thanks.
Hi,
Thanks. I’ll give that a try on the trainer. I have been outside on the road completing the workouts (beautiful weather and holidays). I have been increasing the difficulty of every workout by riding above the top of each target zone for the interval and riding the recovery at zone 2 instead of low zone 1. This is to make the workout harder and hopefully give the system data to make changes.
But…it seems no changes and my thought has been that maybe HR data being higher is causing it to read that the workout was harder than I responded EVEN THOUGH my power numbers are higher than the suggested intervals???
Cheers
