Smart move by Lefevre (not something I say often or lightly). I’m sure Cav made various promises about being willing to work for Jakobsen in exchange for the ride and being happy with getting an occasional shot at a stage. And the PR hit they will get if Cav wins a stage will be massive.
This gives QS two cards to play in the sprints….as well as a backup in case of a crash.
Impressive win from Cav from the breakaway. It would be pretty great for the QS sponsors/exposure for Cav to be there. He’s in great shape. Though I think it’s hard to say it’s the best plan tactically. Cav needs a lot of help to get through the mountain stages and I’m not sure how valuable he is as a lead out man given his diminutive stature and aerodynamic sprinting position.
All that being said, I really hope he gets to go. I’d be big time rooting for him to get number 35.
Yip the story was saying that only 13th in the French champs but given who it is the event and his nationality I would have expected them to have still chose him. I don’t know what the field was like in the French Champs though, 13th might be a terrible result if there was only 14 weak riders but it doesnt sound to bad to me to warrant his exclusion. Perhaps though it was his decision (or influenced by him)
I don’t know; my gut tells me Jumbo may cut him loose to grab one of the early mountain stages if they are feeling confident and/or the opportunity presents itself.
La Fevre better hope QS delivers stage wins, and a bunch, or the 2nd and 3rd guessing over leaving Cav and Alaphilippe home will be pretty brutal, and probably start early.
I’ve enjoyed watching Cavendish win for many years, but I can’t get worked up over his exclusion from the Tour team. This has been known since the start of the season.
In other news it’s time once again to create a mediocre Velogames team. I may even try the Cyclingtips fantasy game but it requires more thought.
I don’t disagree that there will be an uproar. Particularly from the British cycling media.
Realistically though, if they don’t get wins with Jakobsen it’s unlikely they’d get them with Cav. Despite the great form they must know internally who is the fastest right now.
Alaphalippe not being there will be a big news thing unless he comes out and says he is struggling for form.
But the 2nd second will never stop, as there is no way to prove that Cav also wouldn’t have won stages or Alaphilppe. Which is what makes second guessing priceless: you are never wrong, but you also aren’t ever right
