The training struggle no one seems to be talking about + feature request

I’ve been using TR for a little over 2 years and had been stalled at about 280 FTP for over a year. Once the beta hit and the new AI FTP settled down the new system really changed how I approached things; seeing the potential month in front of me and the future potential effects of changes in my training and recovery have really changed my attitude – being more responsible and not overdoing it – and as a result I started making real progress again. I blew through the 300 “ceiling” and am on track for 320 by the end of the month and I feel really freakin’ strong.

The thing is…

I was stalled around 280s for so long that I came to identify with certain numbers. Something like 210W would be one of those rides that was deceptively fatiguing. Y’know, “endurance” but pretty challenging. Now 220W kinda feels like cruising altitude. The idea of hanging out around and above my FTP for an 11x6min session back then would have been anxiety producing but this past Wednesday 275-295W for 11x6min was sweet spot.

I’m finding that the old numbers still cause me anxiety even though I’ve moved beyond them physically. I’m finding that my mind is the last to let go of the old paradigm. My body has moved on but my mind still thinks that 250W is going to hurt.

So the feature request: “Hide Watts” Mode!

I heard on a previous TR podcast one of the guest athletes say she doesn’t look at watts while training. I can’t remember if it was Hannah or Hailey Smith or perhaps another female guest (I’m sorry I don’t remember who you were!!) but I thought this was an interesting idea so I started putting a towel over the left side of my screen and trying very hard not to look at the workout before hand. I like it without the watts!

So it would be nice to be able to hide the watt readout. Maybe still see the prediction for month’s end but have the watts fields redacted on the playback screen?

Bit of a niche request I realize but throwing it out there. If nothing else it’s an indication how effective TR has become for me at least and I’m sure there’s more of us in that boat :+1:t3:

Probably best to put this in the dedicated thread no rather than starting a new one ?

Even better bet is to get a sticky note or a short length of electrician’s tape and cover up the offending data fields.

Lo-tech ftw

Bike computer fields are very customisable. Just mark your workouts as “Outdoor” and use bike computer as workout player?

This is what I do, although for different reason (to use intervals.icu workout creator).

Shoot, ya, sorry everyone… should’ve posted in the feature request thread :person_facepalming:t2:

Yeah or like turn the phone over maybe? This seems readily fixable at first glance

Joe

The bike computer can be configured to show %FTP. This will teach you the RPE of your training zones.

Some of us thrive on data. I’m fine with you turning off displays, but I want even more data.

that’s a good idea. I wouldn’t mind seeing newton metres in some situations too, not sure Garmin does nm though
