It’s about the quality not duration.
Different chores and training, I cover them up while listening to the podcast.
No podcast is too long. Some of Joe Rogan’s are 3 hours! I don’t ever have time for that, so I just listen to everything in multiple sessions.
People seem to forget there are pause, and skip function ![]()
Way too long. I really admire the guys for the content but it’s just too much now. They’d be better editing into smaller pods on different topics like the nutrition pod or the training pod or the racing pod. That way it would be easier to listen to what is important too you. I have to listen or skip through stuff that isn’t interesting to me to get to the stuff that is.
A good proxy for this question - when you see a new product video in your YouTube feed, one from GPLama (short to the point) and one from DCRainmaker (long and super detailed), which one do you click on first?
That’s a good point. I would say I’d choose gplama first, then later watch dcrainmaker. But it’s unfair to compare dcrainmaker to the TR podcasts in my opinion. Dcrainmaker goes into very detailed info without a bunch of useless crap as fillers. He jumps right in. TR has so many intros and non useful interuptions and tangents. I really do enjoy Chad’s deep dives. It’s like watching a 10min YouTube video on killer hornets but we dont start talking about the hornets until minute 7.
Agreed. I click on GPLama first but I never actually buy anything that’s been reviewed by DCRainmaker without watching or reading the whole thing.
I’d love to see a DCRainmaker unboxing and review video of a killer hornet!
I don’t have really strong thoughts, I enjoy the length of the podcast, I don’t always get to go start to finish but it’s always there. I obviously can’t speak to why folks listen, whether it’s just to be informed or to be entertained, but I find the format allows for both and the banter most certainly humanizes the TR team. I’d probably find it all less interesting if it was just purely business and answering questions in a highly scripted format.
I’m struggling with the length. Without a commute I have less podcast listening time, and so I have to listen while doing other things. Pretty much everything else I listen to is around an hour, and that fits better with my other activities. I find that sometime I’ve had the TR podcast on for half an hour or more and have no idea what they said because it’s gone on for so long I’ve tuned it out (or because I have paused and then resumed in the middle of a deep dive and I have no idea what is being discussed). Clearly that’s a fault of mine rather than the podcast, but it would be nice if there was a way to have the curated excerpts on the podcast feed (or maybe even a separate one) like they do for YouTube.
I’m guessing the reason why it’s broken into pieces on YouTube is partly down to how their algorithms reward regularity, and also partly because the data has shown that people are more likely to click on a shorter video. It would be interesting to see if the same thing were true for podcast episodes.
We have 100,000 listens per week in the podcast (excluding YouTube) so it’s hard to make a product that makes everyone 100% happy.
But…here are some things we’re improving.
-
On AACC podcast we’re keeping that to two hours and answer live questions at 90 minutes. Other format of personal stories + podcast challenges + deep dives will stay the same.
-
New Science of Getting Faster podcast is launching soon. That’s where we talk directly to the researchers about specific studies. That one will be 100% science and no personal stories. For those who just want information and nothing else, this is your podcast.
-
New Successful Athlete podcast launches soon. This is where we talk to athletes who’ve had some sort of success and we interview them about what they did to achieve it. This will replace the personal interviews on the AACC podcast feed. I suspect we’ll still include some bigger name interviews on the AACC feed but that remains to be seen.
Thanks for the feedback everyone!
Looking forward to #2!
Are these new ones going to be in the same feed or separated?
Separated
The podcast is too short. I listen to it walking my dogs, and it isn’t long enough to last through my dog’s long weekend walk to Ocean Beach and back. About 7.5 - 8miles, and around 2 - 2 1/2 hours.
So @Nate_Pearson, @Jonathan, @chad, and @ambermalika - I challenge you to up the podcast game to hit the 2 - 2 1/2 hour mark, so one podcast lasts the whole long dog walk ![]()
Where can I find them on Stitcher?
They aren’t out yet. We’ll make sure to let everyone know when they launch.
Well, I thought this week’s podcast wasn’t too long.
Just about perfect length and definitely the right topic to have chosen.
I think longer episodes are great, the time stamps on YouTube are great because you can just skip to the topics you’re more interested in.
Besides for last week’s podcast, how are ya’ll liking the 2 hours with questions at 90 minutes?
I know Cape Epic isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but neither was 40k TT. But some people love it.
Personally I like less race talk and more science and explanation talk so would like more of the questions side if it. Also pretty sure I’m in the minority so I learn how to ignore the race parts. Long format is good
2 hour cap is great and I like the set time for listener questions at 90 mins, IMO.
Time limits can sometimes help keep focus and cut tangents down (which aren’t all bad, but can really pull away from the planned topic at times).
