Nice job, Joel….now what 70.3 are your going to do?
Only worry about what you can control…no need to waste energy worrying about the weather.
Go get it tomorrow!
I finally had a chance to go through the guide for Arizona, as it’s usually in there somewhere. And being your first official 70.3, it’s easy to miss along with knowing everything else about the race. But it looks like they did it in person. They started going back to in person this year and I know Oceanside is going to be in person. When I qualified for Worlds this year at St. George in May, they did it both in person and online through email.
I found the slot allocations on the Ironman tracker. If you go the the race in there, on the bottom there is a info tab. Click that and it pops up with more information about the race along with the allocations. But the allocations don’t usually show up until after the race is finished and sometimes they don’t even post them. I would probably say you would be SOL since it was it person but it wouldn’t hurt to send them a email to get in touch and ask if you wanted to. Just be warned that Ironman doesn’t have the greatness communication. Good news is that with you result, I’m sure you’ll have plenty of other opportunities to get one at other races!
I would definitely prefer the run to be shortened
. It is good that they are playing it safe though. Good luck to everybody racing tomorrow!
It’s a doozy!
Stay safe the cycling is in the delta and it’s flat at sea level with few trees except in a few areas.
There will probably be standing water in areas and no protection from the wind.
Definitely unfortunate…but make the most of it. If the bike is a strength, up your power a bit to compensate for the shorter distance.
Few years ago at the Racine 70.3, they shortened the bike to ~31 miles……I figured it wasn’t much more than a 40k TT so I blitzed the course, took the lead in my AG and then had a great run (for me), nearly matching my standalone HM PR. Had a big enough lead from the bike to hang on for the AG win.
Found out that many guys just went with their pre-planned power targets, or just raised them slightly.
Not suggesting you go all out, but definitely adjust your targets due to the shortened distance.
Race well!!!
Disappointing but good luck, I’m sure the marathon will still be hard!
@jmdcovas is in the water at the Cascais 70.3
Who else do we have at California today?
I mean… I think running a marathon after 'just" cycling 56 miles sounds better in this circumstances… Best of luck
I’m debating between chatty and NC.
I like the idea of chatty because it would give me time to train again for great Floridian, which is a race i want to do again, but is the same week as NC
I’m a big fan of Chatty…did 70.3 Worlds there and had a great time (even if my run wasn’t great due to a dodgy stomach).
Great terrain, fantastic city……but the run is hilly AF.
Had some friend do NC and they said they enjoyed it, too but no first-hand knowledge.
I don’t understand the logic of just shortening the bike leg in the conditions that seem to be headed Sacramento’s way…winds that strong are just as dangerous for 56 miles as they are for 112.
And honestly, I think swimming in heavy winds like that will be just as dangerous…
We’ll see what happens, I suppose…be safe, Justin!
IMHO it is the right call given the conditions are windy AF right now and it is going to deteriorate.
I routinely train and do group rides on the roads IMCA chose for the route. Some of the roads (Babel Slough) are sketchy at 20-25mph when its dry… It would have been a fast bike on a good day. I’m looking at two weather stations near the course and at 7:30am its 18mph gusting 31mph. Our house is rattling every minute or two from the gusts.
Gut punch for the athletes, but almost certainly the right call.
Sucks for Justin (and everyone else). I’d be pretty devastated to train that much for months on end and not be able to race.
Sucks big time, I feel terrible for Justin and everyone else.
Thanks all.
Definitely a bummer. I’ve seen all sorts of emotions today; for me, it’s just relief. The second to last race I did, someone died, and the last race I did, a pretty bad bike crash took place just a few minutes ahead of me. I’m absolutely disappointed at the weather, but I think the decision was right. It’s rough out there, I’ve heard stories of debris all over the road, and it’s only going to get worse from here. I feel like a very confident cyclist, but 50mph gusts is outright sketchy. It’s one thing to push yourself in tough conditions, it’s another to make dangerous choices out of stubbornness. I’m happy to race another day.
great attitude, Justin…any idea what they are giving you guys for make-up options yet?
