The wahoo trainer is connected to the trainer road app on the computer. The computer doesn’t seem to control the resistance on the wahoo trainer in erg mode. Trainer road is reading the watt output from the wahoo but the TR program is not controlling the wahoo.
Hey @mattwheatley
I took a look at your ride log data and it looks like you’re using both ANT+ and Bluetooth connectivity, which could cause the problem you are having due to a dual connectivity interference.
Let’s try the following TB steps and let me know how it goes:
- Delete the TR app and download it again here..
- Make sure your Mac is on the latest Software upgrade.
- Connect devices only using Bluetooth (turn off ANT+ on the Devices tab of the TR app).
- Make sure your KCIKR is on the latest firmware update.
Caro,
I have done everything you said in your last email but still ERG does not control the wahoo.
I even tried to recalibrate using the trainer road program and doesn’t seem to finish the calibration. It looks like it hangs up on the spin down after it gets to zero.

Thank you @mattwheatley for sending all this info!
When connecting your KICKR, in the settings, click the Resistance button and then the ERG one again.
Note: Depending on what KICKR you have, you may not need a calibration. But if it does, let’s try doing the calibration on the Wahoo’s app. More info here: How to calibrate a smart trainer
Then, please perform this quick 4 minute workout and save it so I can look at the ride log data on the backend: Power Training Ridethrough
Note: doesn’t matter how the KICKR is recording data, the idea is to save it so I can see what may be wrong
Has the trainer ERG mode ever worked with TR or other apps? With a free Zwift trial and account you get 25 km per/mo for free so you could try it with Zwift and see what happens.
Yup. It has worked with TR and with zwift for years. Only in the last 3 weeks has it stopped working in ERG mode.

Odd. I can’t think of anything. Maybe Power Match got turned on or something weird like that? IDK if that’s even possible if another PM isn’t connected.
Caro,
I did the workout and it uploaded to Trainerroad. The resistance seemed to work as expected and felt about as it should. Could it have been something as simple as cycling through the “resistance” setting and then back to “ERG setting?
I will try it with a “real workout” tomorrow.
Hopefully this solved it.
Matt
Caro,
I did the 4 minute “power training ridethrough” as you suggested. It seemed to work fine.
Hopefully you can see it on the back end. I also copied you on an email I sent to the Wahoo tech support. Hopefully you can see that one.
I thought the problem was solved but when I did a regular workout this morning. Unfortunately it was back to the same old problem (the ERG did not control the wahoo).
I am going to try doing a workout like I regularly do with TR running off the iPhone.
Hopefully we get to the bottom of the problem.
Incidentally, you are the best tech support I have come across. You seem to understand the system well.
Thanks again. Matt
Caro,
I may have figured it out. Maybe. I think the trainer road app and computer have difficulty communicating with the Wahoo trainer because I run the Wahoo roam cycling computer at the same time.
I tried to run TR and the wahoo today and it didn’t work. I tried it with my iPhone, shutting off the main computer and still it did not work. I then shut off the Wahoo Roam and restarted the TR app on the iPhone and it worked!
I then started the computer back up, kept the Whoo roam off and ran the trainer road app. It worked.
I think that running the Wahoo kickr and Roam at the same time is the problem. Surprising because I have run it together in the past.
I will give it a few times before I am convinced.

You might be able to connect the trainer to the Roam as a PM rather than a controllable trainer. I can do with my Garmin so that the Garmin will record the power but not interfere with trainer control.
Hello @mattwheatley !! Apologies for the late response here. I was off for the weekend.
I think you hit the nail on the head! I am glad you figured out the Wahoo Roam was causing the issue. I should have asked if the trainer was connected to a different device.
I have a feeling that the next few workouts using the TR app without the Roam will run smoothly. When you have “two head units” (because the TR app essentially becomes your “indoor head unit”) are used together they steal the trainer’s signal from each other.
After you do a few workouts to rule out the problem, you can try what @Saddlesaur is recommending to be able to use the TR app and the Roam simultaneously. You could also try connecting your KICKR to the TR app first with Bluetooth (keep ANT+ OFF on the TR app) and then connect the KICKR via ANT+ to the Roam.
Note: This will not guarantee the KICKR will work perfectly when dually connected.
