Target Power data field missing after latest Garmin update

Oh man, I hate this new ‘target’ field. The target range is really hard to read on a 530 when you’re pushing hard. Showing average for the interval is horrible and I seem to end up chasing the little arrow up and down.

Target power on my 510 was way simpler and a better experience. I actually purchased the 530 because it was supposed to be the better computer for workouts, and instead it feels worse.

Just my rant for the day having done TR outside this morning.

My 530 is setup something like this, and the average power is only shown in the “Lap Power” field.

not sure what field you’re using as I’m using the ‘target’ field on my 1030 which shows a single number for the interval and mentally know I have a +/- around that. I don’t see any up/down arrows, but then again I’m not displaying a field for av lap power. Since I’m not a fan of the Garmin workout page (which I haven’t found a way to edit). I pretty much follow the TR recommendations for my page setup: Time to go, target power, 3-sec pwr, workout comparison (graphic of targets and actual, then I add in cadence and HR. If I want to see how I did on the interval during the recovery period I scroll to the lap summary page.

Now having 66-year old eyes I really appreciate the display size on my 1030 so the smaller screen size may make a difference. Of course, YMMV.

How are you seeing 3s PWR as the center field? The only option under workouts is ‘target’ and that gives you “step avg power” which isn’t super helpful. I found seeing the lower and upper limit on the green bar is tough when you’re going hard. I was doing my workout at sunrise this morning and couldn’t see my target range at all, was just guessing and trying to move the arrow.

TrainingPeaks is feeding the workouts to my Garmin, forgot about the difference.

I’m guessing that TrainerRoad would need to make a change to get 3-sec avg power to be displayed in a big font size, above the red/yellow/green bar.

For what its worth, my 530 always displays 3s PWR when TrainingPeaks workouts use either a single power target or a range target. The difference is that if:

  • the workout specifies a range of 220-230 watts, then 530 shows green range of 220-230W. While that might be ridiculously narrow for outside (depending), you do have precise control over what appears on the 530 in this case
  • and if the workout specifies a single target of 225W (for example 90% FTP for 250 FTP), then the 530 displays +/- 10% which is something like 203-248W if I did the math correctly

Im wondering why trainerroad hasnt their own app for garmin?

why not simply send a range during the export process? Avoids having to maintain yet another app, and avoids the problem of having to setup the Garmin with matching zones.

Ahhh. Interesting that TrainingPeaks treats it differently. I am pushing direct from TrainRoad to my Garmin.

I’ve gone away from using the Garmin Target power field and now use the target power IQ Connect field, it’s much easier to see and gives you the exact number the app says for outdoor workouts for work intervals. It tends to show a lower power for rest and warmup intervals, but that’s not something that bother me since they’re not work periods

Nice. The TarPow field located third row on the right, correct?

Yep!

I use this as well. Just like it use to be!

Is it this one?

Yes. I actually have the visual range one @bbarrera likes on my screen also. Depending how intense things are, I look at one or the other

the red/yellow/green bouncing triangle one is under Workout > Target.

I’ve tried the single target field and don’t like it because it is impossible to keep power at a single number for more than a second. So much easier to see either the workout comparison graph or the red/yellow/green bouncing triangle. To each their own…

Ah, I wrote Target Power but I am using the IQ Connect TarPow and like it.

@nick @IvyAudrain I’m trying to set up a Garmin 530 for outdoor workouts right now and for the life of me cannot find the “Target” data field described. Has it been renamed or moved again in a Garmin update since this post? Thanks.

There was a change in Garmin about 12-18 months ago. It is now called Workout Comparison, and can be found in the Workouts category of datafields on the 530.

Sorry for the troubles! It’s my understanding the “Target” field is still nested in the “Workouts” category. I’ve followed up with a team member who has a 530 to confirm. I’ll let you know when I hear back from them.

If you’re after a static field that tells you the power that is middle of the range (&will achieve your TSS target), then you will be best using the Connect IQ field known as Target Power
