I have a one day road race scheduled for a Sunday in the summer that I am viewing as a B, sort of A, event.
The “problem” is that the week of the race I will be on a family vacation and I will unlikely be able to travel with my bike.
The vacation ends on Friday and we would get home the same day, Saturday is a travel day to the race location/hotel, and Sunday is race day.
I typically do 12 hours of volume, per week, during a block so usually do half of that for tapering. While I understand this is not ideal I am trying to figure out alternatives so I can taper a bit and not detrain too much.
The easy answer seems to be running but I am not a particularly strong runner and have limited experiences doing intervals while running.
Any suggestions or high level goals I should consider if I want to taper off the bike?
To be honest a week off doesn’t sound too bad for a taper. I’d be more concerned about the amount of travelling just before the race. Can you fit a short ride in on Friday evening or Saturday morning?
Depending on the holiday location, maybe you can rent a bike for a day during the week? Some people also find going to the gym and using the gym bike useful.
I wouldn’t do any running if you don’t usually run. There’s a high chance of overdoing it and ending up with sore legs/feet/hips/back, which is not what you want before the race.
If you’re not a runner, don’t run.
I agree that the bigger concern for me would be the amount of travel stress before the race, but there’s nothing you can do about that other than some mindfulness to keep it to a minimum.
If it’s an option, you could try finding a gym bike on vacation and do a 30- or 45-minute workout from your prescribed taper week.
Alternatively (or additionally), if you have time/energy, I’d do a 30-minute opener the day before the event. Nothing that’s going to exhaust you or deplete glycogen, just something to get the muscles firing after a week off. Without this, you’ll still have 99% of your fitness, but might feel a bit sluggish at first (depending on how long the race is).
The final thing I’d do is remind yourself that you’re doing the best of your ability in the given circumstances. Could you have gone a minute faster with an ideal taper? Maybe, but life didn’t provide the opportunity for an ideal taper. Go have fun—hopefully you’re not going into the gulag if you don’t win this race

Really liked @mbasile response!
You’ll probably be doing plenty of things on your family vacation, so I say you just go enjoy it.
On Friday, when you’re back, if you can, you can do an easy spin and Saturday openers. And on race day, make sure to get in a nice warm-up!
I’d also have to agree with the general consensus that running is probably not a great idea if you’re not used to it haha.
Thanks for all the thoughtful responses everybody!
For a little more context the travel isn’t too bad: a 90 minute flight one way so I am not too concerned about stress arising from that. And the vacation is beach house on a NC beach so the only bike I would be able to rent is a cruiser.
My approach will to be play it by ear and not stress too much about it.
