Strava leaderboards no longer free

That’s great, when are they gonna start?

Glad it’s working for you. Makes me even more angry I’ve paid money for something that free users get and it works for them while I pay and get 0 tech support on their end to help me troubleshoot even though I followed every step of a reset as required.

Yeah, i’m done.

yeah that would be seriously cool. I think we all (or most) agree that Strava didn’t do much in terms of developing new features and left many, many possibilities unexplored.
But at least that means there is hope, new and exciting features are coming our way in the future :crossed_fingers:t2:

He estimates 2.3% are paying members not 10%.

I still haven’t seen the activity on Strava, actually. But I did see it about 8 other places around the internet. Same with Lionel’s Mt. Lemmon KOM. Never saw the Strava activity, but heard/read about it many places. Strava isn’t the be-all end-all.

I agree with @Captain_Doughnutman, I think it would be an initial shock if Strava disappeared, but I wouldn’t miss it. With every update, it’s becoming less useful. And with the removal of segments, just another reason I use it less and less. And I have nothing against paying for services I like. And if Strava could actually fix the segment problems, maybe I would pay for it, too.

For how many people here supposedly don’t care about Strava, there’s a lot of recycled crying and complaining about a platform they claim not to use, and the thread size is here to prove it. If I had all their tears in a jar I’d probably have enough salt to fuel for aT least half a dozen KOMs.

I’ve never felt like people on this forum were elitists until now, and certainly not everyone, but there’s a handful of people here who seem to act like anything aside from indoor training on TR is beneath them. “I’ve never used it anyway because Strava is a crap social platform”, while they post 10+ times a day on a social platform looking to get a pat on the back in the form of a “nice post” badge.

If you have actual reasons for disliking the program, fine. But if you’re just a grumpy old man who simply doesn’t use something because others do and you can’t stand to not be different, then I feel kinda sad for you.

That’s interesting analysis, but it’s also 5 years old! There are a lot more analytics available via 3rd parties using the API nowadays and that surely has to have had a downward effect on Strava’s premium numbers given how lacking their offering is in comparison.

Wait till you find the thread explaining how we all make coffee. lol

Everyone takes to cycling their own way. Like any hobby.

I think this discussion is veering away from the forum ethos.

Let’s keep it civil people.

I stuff a heaping tablespoon of Cafe Bustello into my refillable K-Cup, and then run it on 8oz strong, twice, without changing out the grinds. :smiling_imp:

I don’t think they have KOMs for riding on high horses.

Now ain’t that the pot calling the kettle black.

Now this could create a much more opinionated and hmm long thread than even this has!

The KOM comment was clearly sarcastic. Also I’m not talking down to people who spend 80% of their time on a trainer getting ready for a dozen events per year even though to me it screams boring. But according to some, people posting their rides on Strava are wasting time on a social platform that offers no performance benefit, as if everyone cares about their performance.

I got into slightly more serious (no racing) cycling almost a decade ago and that seemed to be around the same time that Strava started.
I’d almost compare Strava to a gateway drug of cycling for reward. I’d enjoy my ride and then afterwards it was fantastic to see where I had improved and even, yes once or twice, got a KOM! You could settle debates with friends about who was actually faster on a segment despite someone starting first or whatever.
Once hooked I wanted to get more so that’s where TrainerRoad came in to help me get faster. And TR sure worked.

I think it’s a shame that this ‘gateway’ is closing up for new entrants. That’s all. I think there are places they could charge people. But for beginners there is a real thrill about seeing themselves move up a Leaderboard. Or there was.

They know that, and they probably realized this is the only way they can stay afloat. Free users can still see their times and position on the board, just can’t analyze the segment or compare efforts. But there can still be friendly smack talk because you can tell your buddy “I got this time”. My Strava experience was the same, if I never chased segments id never have moved to TR training and ended up where I am. I also love to meet new riders (maybe not right now), see where my friends are riding because sometimes I save the routes and ride them myself, and enjoy leaving comments on friends’ rides and encouraging them to keep riding

Though I’d take a screen shot while I still can lol.

Two are three days later and I still see no change yet. Still route planner, still full leader boards, still pushing to third parties.
I can’t remember if I mentioned I don’t mind paying for it on occassion but it has to be worth the cost. I would say I pay for 3 - 4 out of 12 months a year. I paid for it from about 2015 until they changed it to summit, that was just weird so I cancelled sub.

It works out to $3.93/mo if you just buy an annual “gift sub” on their Black Friday or cyber Monday sale for $59 and apply it to your own account, then also redeem the bonus 3 free months code yourself.

Doing this extends your sub by 15 months every year and it doesn’t matter when your renewal date is, it just extends your subscription further into the future. I’ve done this for a few years and I don’t expire well into late 2021. Use longer trial to get close to November and do the sale.

Most of us do like the app and I really think $5/mo at regular annual price is still nothing to worry about if you even spend a few minutes per day on it. It’s definitely mentally healthier than other social media options. It was the first app I found when I bought my first bike and it’s just part of my day to see where my friends are riding.

Not sure about you guys, but Strava is the only way I can communicate with many of my cycling acquaintances/friends. I don’t friend them on Facebook, I only have a few of their cell phone numbers, most of them don’t Zwift and 0 of them are on this forum. I would say 9 out of 10 of them are on Strava and we can set up rides, ask how they are doing and do other friendly things. It seems all of this can continue with the free version, but the fee is less than a cup of coffee so I’ll keep subscribing.

I don’t think the social side is changing in general terms. Might make a difference to setting up rides though.
