Strava leaderboards no longer free

sure but like I said if Strava went “poof” and disappeared tomorrow I would miss it. Just saying it is hard to imagine not being inspired everyday by seeing friends doing bad-ass feats of athleticism :muscle: :biking_man: :swimming_man: :running_man: :mountain: :muscle:

Not really. Strava only made us think we needed strava. We don’t. I’m not sure any serious athlete relies on strava for much of anything. As other’s have said, it’s a social platform disguised as a performance tool.

^ see above, I’ll just agree to disagree. “We” don’t think Strava is necessary, its not oxygen or food or shelter, “I” simply enjoy seeing so many people doing feats of athleticism on roads I’ve traveled and want to travel.

My Strava feed is filled with daily inspiration, so refreshing and why I stay away from most social platforms.

Like last night… heading back into town I missed out on an epic ride with people I enjoy including a bad ass lady thats been going to Kona for 20 years… 26mph at 231W that would have been a fun ride back from the river (the local young stud was pulling at 360W)

ride on my forum friends! :biking_man:

I guess since I’m fairly anti social I’m in the definitely wouldn’t miss Strava camp. I pretty much would rather jump in front of a bus than go on a group ride lol.

A note from the Strava founders.
For what it’s worth I’ll keep subscribing.

What existential nonsense is this? of course we’d miss it. It’s something many of us have used and enjoyed for years.

Strava is something most of us use every time we run or ride. I can justify that subscription a lot easier than many others I pay for.

I don’t zwift anymore but I could see them tweaking the “companion” app or create a clone of it in some way with more social like features and steal some strava users.

The Z companion app already has a lot of similar social functionality. “Ride ons”, comments, virtual photos, PRs and achievements, race results, etc.

Exactly my point. They would just need to let in non zwift users. Have zwift = free. Non zwift = small fee.

Hmm, say what?

I enjoyed watching Lionel chase after the Mt. Lemmon KOM. It was motivational for him as well as he pushed himself to the limit chasing it. It killed some trainer time for me watching him go after it on youtube. Without Strava I get to see how close he matches the blue blocks for hours on his Trainerroad profile or ride his stationary bike on Zwift? Not interested in that, sorry. I follow a lot of pro athletes on Strava and I enjoy seeing what they are doing.

Interested in Keegan’s Everest record? Where do I see that, on his TR profile, Zwift? No I went to Strava like the rest of the world. That’s where Keegan referred to the ride on other social media. It’s a social “tool” if it needs a description.

You don’t need doughnuts or bikes or this forum but you eat them, ride them and you are here every day. I don’t think you are “serious” about any of those passions (OK maybe the doughnuts) but you are here.

If you don’t want to pay the $5 a month don’t pay it but it’s no bigger than that. It’s not about need.

COVID antics.

Entertainment.

Exactly my point: strava = entertainment.

For me, it’s such a tenuous form of entertainment that I don’t have any strong-bond affinity towards it and not using it isn’t going detract from the enjoyment of actual bike riding.

No you said it was something Strava somehow convinced us we need. Which is it?

I almost responded yesterday but didn’t. Never paid so they don’t care about me. My reason for unlinking is I used it as a central place for my rides that’s it nothing more. They had my data for years and couldn’t figure out how to monetize it. They took a heavy hand lately and that is what I dont like. If I don’t use any of the features why give them my data when they just squandered it, and now they are taking away something I received by giving them my data. I use Garmin Connect, TR, and Golden Cheetah. Don’t need strava getting my data and get almost nothing in return.

I like their ‘free’ route builder. But if they are going to charge for that… I guess RidewithGPS is going to get my business. Strava just does not have any best in class functions.

The only thing Strava had was leaderboards and I’m sure a bunch of people would build routes with their platform. But they don’t have anything worth paying for. The challenges are not engaging enough. Analysis is mediocre. There are so many other platforms that are so much more useful for the nerdy bike racer.

Oh well, so long Strava.

Strava will never be a training tool, its a social one. Cycling is very much about socialising, and Strava has been the reason for growth in cycling. Haven’t paid as i haven’t needed to, but i will start paying.

Things which are good for the sport deserve support. Have a few less gels a month…

Other thing I’m hoping for is potential influx of subs will prompt some new features. If that many people are summit members now we’ll all want some new bits.

I’d be much more sympathetic to Strava’s cause if they hadn’t basically stagnated their app development for the last few years. During that time 3rd party apps like intervals.icu and Elevate have filled in the gaps providing better analytics on the data we’ve all stored in Strava. Now, instead of making their premium offer better than the competition, they’re blackmailing their users by taking away segments which are one of Strava’s two core features (the other being social). That’s just a shitty way to run a business.
