Special Guest: Justin Williams – Ask a Cycling Coach 263

Very enjoyable podcast. I enjoyed listening to Justin, his enthusiasm and humour kept things bouncing along and he’s had an interesting journey with some good lessons and perspectives to share.

Good work TR! And L39ion!

That’s not ego. That’s confidence. Most sprinters have it. Ok… Maybe a bit of ego but I certainly wouldn’t call Justin egotistical. Far from it.

Out of curiosity I went back to the episode and clicked on 5 random spots. Three points were lessons, one was a personal experience in how teams have been made, and one was about himself.

We all take different things from different episodes but I’d take an episode like this over Chad or Amber (don’t get me wrong, I like them) going on and on about something I don’t care about. I still wouldn’t give any thumbs down.

If you’re not a racer this may not be an episode for you.

This was a fantastic podcast. Justin is articulate and charismatic and has a great story to tell.

He also embodies an at-cause attitude. He saw something he didn’t like in the world of cycling, and instead of just complaining about it like 99%+ of us might do, he went out and did something about it by starting a team.

And not just any team - one that wins, and has a strong and growing influence in the sport.

:+1:t3::+1:t3:

100% agree with that statement. They were some other things discussed that I enjoyed, but it was tough for someone like me who isn’t interested in racing to get through the whole podcast. If you’re a racer, then yeah I can see where you would enjoy the podcast.

It’s tough to separate because the racer, the racing, and the racing team are the tools used to broaden the vision and extend the action. However, as JW says, the racing is just a fraction of what being on that team entails.

Would you have tuned in if it was just some random office worker with a gofundme account?

Would the episode have garnered ‘too much ego’ and ‘too much racing’ reactions if someone as egotistical and race dominant as lxnce was the guest?

I think some expectations exceeded context.

Hope JW and l39gion will be back.

Now that’s a podcast I’d love to see!! :boom:

Personally, I don’t care who the guest is when discussing racing. Racing is a boring subject for me.

Didn’t Nate post that they tried to get him on but he hadn’t heard of TR??? So maybe it’s the other way around… they were introducing Justin and his followers to TR.

Oh please, you know you need another 45 minute deep dive on the infinitesimally small gains that come from ingesting 120mg of beet juice 13 times a day for 48 days straight by untrained college students!

Good episode.
The guy is just very passionate about cycling and it shows. Justin is great for the sport.
Does he have a little bit of an ego, maybe. But I see more love and excitement for the sport than I do ego.

Bit of a leap to assume that I haven’t or don’t race. N fact I’m a Cat3 on both the road and MTB. In my opinion, you don’t need an ego like that to be an effective racer that gets results. Defining it as “confidence” and not straight up bragging is a cop-out in my opinion.

This is a personality clash-thing, nothing more, nothing less. He’s the kind of guy I’d distance myself from immediately at a party or social gathering. Taking nothing away from his skill, ability and resume, clearly he’s very talented I just can’t stand listening to how awesome he thinks he is on a bike…

Yet at this hypothetical party I’m assuming you are not venting your negative feelings to the room because that would be rude, right? Or perhaps this is a case of “Justin is a public figure now therefore I get to bad-mouth him at will behind my comfy sanctuary of internet anonymity.” ?

Your response is nonsense and not related to my comments at all. Since you seem to have keyed in on my hypothetical example (used to illustrate a point) let’s consider that for a second. I clearly indicated that I’d distance myself from the individual doing the bragging and haven’t indicated or suggested that any bad-mouthing would take place. There’s nothing here, please move on.

Secondly, I started with a single post and all subsequent posts have been in response to comments that other TR forum participants have made. That’s part of being involved in a discussion forum. The discussion part. I wouldn’t classify this as continual bad mouthing of a public figure on a discussion forum

Finally, my posts from the beginning of this discussion have always been balanced and I’ve gone out of my way to underline JW’s resume and accomplishments, I’d say this is far from ‘bad-mouthing someone because they are a public figure’. Not sure how you got it twisted and interpreted my comments in the way you have but I invite you to take another read of my posts.

@bclarkson let’s keep this discussion on-topic, I don’t have the time or interest in getting into an argument with you on what amounts to a question of opinion

New Legion Jersey Out!

Anyone else think Justin should write a book? I’d buy it.

No. JW and l39gion need to be experienced IRL not chillin’ in a hammock flipping pages.

Besides, he’s at the start of creating perhaps the most important chapter of his story; I’ll wait until the book has an ending.

Swag on the other hand…

As a female listener that’s exactly how I interpreted the flow of the podcast.
Justin Williams IS Awesome.
TR is doing an Awesome job

Women’s???

I had exactly this reaction. Freaking let’s go Rapha, get it together.

Anyone here get a chance to pick up a L39GION training jersey yesterday?

I did not. They sold out in minutes.

With this much [well deserved] hype around the team, it would be cool to see their brand get into mainstream fashion. Would help the image of road cycling a lot in the US.
