Thanks Justin and the whole TR crew. Best podcast yet!
Great podcast. Never listened to so many people enjoy themselves. The laughter is contagious
Dreams do come true!
Only took 11 months…and a global pandemic…and global protests…
His comments about USAC were awesome! Thanks for saying it Justin!
Good insight from him about the nitty gritty of what happens in team politics. Looked like Amber agreed with a lot of what he said. I’m surprised shes never talked about much on other pod casts
Ditto to the others, super enjoyable podcast and covered a wide swath of topics with ease and flow. Justin is quite the story teller and has some great perspective to share. Had me smiling and giggling along with the crew. Made the best of a 3 hour drive for sure.
For me, this Podcast was right up there with the first time I was introduced to @ambermalika via TR.
I haven’t done any digging into Justin or L39ION so the Podcast was a real education for me. Justin came across as a really approachable figure, someone who was totally at ease with themselves. Have to admit that I thought he was a little older than he is but, my estimate was based on his timeline and experience in the sport.
Good luck to him and the L39ION Team moving forward.
And I was shocked to hear that Bahati is only 38! Seems like he should be 68, he’s been around for so long.
His secret is years of consistent training, doing 1000+ crits, and 10,000+ sprints.
I was hoping it was beet juice.
TR nailed this with Justin.
Open and honest. (and I’ve only got two hands).
Love your work!
One of the best podcasts! Did I catch this wrong or was what Justin said about sprinting technique the opposite of what Nate and Pete said in Sprinting 101?
The analogy may of went over my head but to me it sounded like when Justin pushes with his right leg he pulls with his left hand (Pushing with right hand) and bike will sway from right side to left.
What I got from the TR Sprint blog was that when Pete and Nate push with right leg they pull the bar into them with their right arm. It sounded like this confused Nate too on the podcast so my question really is does it matter and just do which one is natural or is one technique right or wrong?
Yeah, pretty much everything he said resonated with me. I had a similar experience of imagining the top level to be different from what it was, and realizing that I had to proactively build my own program by pitching personal sponsors and getting creative with my own business model. Also that so much of success in the sport is being in the right place at the right time and knowing the “right” people. I got lucky on a few counts with that, and really unlucky on other counts. And it’s disheartening to see how much those connections can make or break a career. My way of trying to change that has been to build a network of mentors to help other women coming up through the sport, and I love seeing how Justin is tackling this full throttle by building a team and entire community around it. I’d have loved to keep talking with him for a few more hours!
Just about to start my shift and have been saving until then. Sounds like it will be good.
I think it’s more down to different visualizations and explanations.
Physics dictates that with the massive down force of the power leg (let’s say left foot) you must counteract that force (pulling up on the left handle bar along with pushing down on the right handle bar) or you will fall over to the high force side.
The intricacies come from the timing and more specific directions of force application through the pedal circle. We are typically holding the drops forward in the hoop, so the push-pull is not simply up-down or forward-backward.
Trying to explain the change in force and direction with a highly dynamic action is a challenge.
Gotta say, they are possibily the only “pro” team kit I think I could wear without feeling like an try hard, just feeling like I am a fan. That and the California bear looks so cool.
I haven’t listened yet, looking forward to this because I took a look at USAC public financial data when I got my first license Dec 2018. If I’m interpreting the data correctly, USAC paid more to execs than for the athletes they are chartered with supporting. If anyone wants to review here is most recent data: Fiscal Information | USA Cycling
This podcast delivered in all departments – from the technique and tactics of winning sprints, to not just a description of teamwork in a race but a live demonstration of teamwork in a podcast, exhibiting in real time how a team can become more diverse than it used to be, with each member doing what they can from their position to make the world a little better for everyone. Maybe just a few bucks in the GoFundMe from me. Of course late and little, but now better than never, and something rather than nothing. Good for TR for this example.
I actually like the blue block style jersey. But I like their attitude. I agree, feel more like a fan than claiming to be some sort of pro.
And being a fan of the riders and the team as an entity vs being a fan of the riders and the cool jersey…but not the title sponsor.
Like, really…how many people have a USPS jersey cuz they love the mail? Or a SKY jersey cuz they love the news? Or a Le Groupement jersey cuz…oh, who am I kidding, no one owns one of those.
