Rouvy can now use the zwift click, is TR next?

According to DCRainmaker, you can now use just the zwift click with your trainer and cassette on Rouvey, no need for the zwift cog. Will we be able to do this soon in TR? My trainer bike doesn’t shift well and I’m reluctant to put money into so this would be a huge win!

I watched that video this AM on the trainer…I’ll be pleasantly shocked if Zwift doesn’t shut this down quickly.

I’d say they cannot, not with an update anyway without pissing of a lot of their own customers, maybe legally?

How? They would still be able to use their systems on Zwift and there aren’t that many Rouvy users period, and even fewer with Zwift Clicks doing this now.

They are entitled to code their products as they wish…really no different than Shimano saying their Di2 systems would no longer be compatible with Hammerhead (SRAM) computers.

Why? If you’re IN TR, doing a workout. Just let ERG drive, or go manual and shift?

Sure…makes no difference for use with TR. But Rouvy found a way to use Zwift’s electronic shifting tech in their platform (and without using the Zwift Cog, although you technically don’t need it for use in Zwift, either). SO if you are riding in Rouvy and need to shift as the terrain changes, you can just use electronic shifting now.

It does add more gear range than some real-world drivetrain systems, so that is a benefit (especially since my trainer bike is a Campag 9 spd system w/ a 53/39 crank and 25t lowest cog :scream:)

How the hell I ever rode that gearing when I lived in CO is beyond me. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

In the comments of the DC post the app QZ is mentioned by its developer and it seems virtual shifting would be possible via that app and should work with TR as well. Seems the app acts as a proxy between trainer and training app.

Not sure but I guess it’s the “Resistance shifting with bluetooth remote” feature (under Misc) here:

I can’t imagine TR choosing to reverse engineer Zwift’s solution like Rouvy did

I have some use cases for a shiftable/clickable zwift cog in TR. First is that I use standard/resistance mode when doing anything sweet spot and over so “just ERG it” ain’t quite right for me. I dislike the changes in feel of the resistance at higher powers and prefer to be in charge of my own output. Second, and more recently, of my 2 bikes I have a bike that’s 11 speed and now I have a 12 speed which may or may not work without a lot of clicky almost shift noises and miss-shifts. I’d rather not have to swap cassettes not to mention Shimano doesn’t make a narrow range 12 speed cassette yet like the 12-25 11 speed I have on there right now as far as I know. Lastly, speaking of cassettes, I feel like zwift cog is a cheaper, easier upkeep option than expensive cassettes where I only use about 5 cogs anyway. Yes, 105 12 speed cassettes are cheaper than the zwift cog where the zwift cog is cheaper than 12 speed ultegra cassettes. But considering the simplicity of the zwift cog I feel like that single ring is cheaper to replace when the time comes. That $80 is probably mostly for the button unit. The big downside is not being able to just shift the front ring to go from recovery to work intervals but I’d guess I could figure it out.

There are certainly some use cases for being able to switch gears in TR, but they are pretty limited and dedicating resources to enabling Zwift virtual shifting is probably not the best use for them.

Agreed, I just wanted to post my use case in hopes that it could pique TR’s interest. While I hope the zwift integration might put such a thing on their radar (I also need Saris to make a firmware update with cog compatibility if they haven’t yet) I understand if this is barely even a back burner project. Or maybe unlike Rouvy figuring it out for themselves Zwift will just share the code to bring the 2 platforms that much closer. But I’m going to guess TR is busy hard at work on PL 2.0.

I would imagine there’s interest in TR’s part; using Zwift’s controllers for things like adjusting intensity, toggling erg mode, etc. would be awesome. However, when the Zwift Play controllers were released, Zwift said their plan was to open up their proprietary protocol to third parties and then they never did. It’d be nice if they followed up on that so nobody has to reverse engineer things; if I were TR I would 100% not want to invest time in a solution that’s not formally supported by Zwift. (But with TR + Zwift integration seemingly bringing both companies closer, maybe there’s hope.)

That would be pretty cool…but the new Zwift integration somewhat alleviates the development need for that. I can use the Zwift controllers to adjust intensity in Zwift now, and by definition, if I have Zwift controllers, I am a Zwift subscriber.

Yep, same, it’s actually one of my favorite things about the integration. But I could see someone who doesn’t want to use Zwift benefitting from being able to buy the Zwift Play or Zwift Click just to use it for TrainerRoad… but that may explain why Zwift hasn’t opened the protocol, little financial incentive if it stops people from subscribing to Zwift.

I think the next logical step would be to connect my already wireless Di2 shifters to the software and use them for virtual shifting. Why do we need the Click for this? You could also use the two buttons on the hoods for virtual shifting, or even the sprint shifters that some riders have.

For me, the best part about virtual shifting is the gear range. Sometimes my kids ride their mountain bikes on the trainer in Zwift or Rouvy, and on the flats, they quickly run out of gears and spin out too early. Having a larger virtual cassette is perfect—not just for them, but for me as well. It’s not only about realism; it’s about making indoor riding more fun.

I like Zwift for the People and Sozial Aspect, for my long indoor Ride i like Rouvy better going all over the World ride famous Mountains is also very cool.

I hope now for a Rouvy to Trainerroad Integration. But to be honest i already do Trainerroad Zwift and TR Rouvy for about 3 Years. So i am used to it.

I’d love a play controller just for adjusting workout settings and maybe media playback.

If someone one made a 3rd party one with custom key macros I’d be all over it. I’m less interested in shifting right now but when my cassette dies I’ll go to a SS cog so then it could be cool.
