RGT Cycling acquired by Wahoo = "Wahoo X"

Inititially I was really excited, love the SF video’s for yoga and to get RGT for free, seemed like a great day, but now that I have sat and thought … the develpment of the Systm has been slow, near glacial, with things promised “in the next few weeks” (in september) just appearing … so I am now wondering what will happen to RGT if anything and will this development actually lead anywhere … but it’s good to get more stuff for the same price (Wahoo subscriber)

Per Ray’s article:

the most consistent range puts it roughly in the ballpark of 50 people.

This is of interest to me mainly as I hadn’t heard of RGT. I use zwift, and do my coaches imported workouts on it, but I don’t really need zwift at all. What I really want though is the ability to preview routes of races. Ironman have recently left Rouvy and linked with Fulgaz, but the list of race routes that are mapped out is a bit pathetic, and certainly not worth parting with my hard earned cash for.
However, now I know that RGT has a magic routes function, I can at least partly visualise my IM Nice course.
I’d be interested to know from users if you can upload a full course but skip to particular places on it, or do you need to pedal your way round it?

RGT Magic roads are fairly limited. There is a distance limit for one thing (need to find it, but it’s well short of full and even half distance routes IIRC), and the scenery is total random/fabricated and has no resemblance to the real routes (at least at present). Some or all of that might change, but we don’t know.

(plays as I sit here crying and looking into my mirror)

So does this make it more likely of a Trainerroad/Zwift merger, or less? Consolidation isn’t a great idea in my opinion, but let it happen I guess. Who am I to get in the way…

  • That is partly what I hinted at above. I do think it will drive more internal discussion on both sides at the very least. I still need time to read the articles, but this move is not a small one, especially if the pricing I skimmed is accurate.
  • In what way(s)?

  • There is kind of now change in “competition” since RGT remains. But it will presumably get a boost in exposure and users from this move. In that sense, having a more balanced (yet still far lower user base initially) virtual indoor cycling app to compete against Z is beneficial to everyone.

  • At this time, Z is the goliath and largely rules with no equal. It’s one reason I think Z has been slow to adapt and generally a pain in the ass compared to their faster moving origins. Perhaps this will spur them into another gear and get proper development going in many of their lagging areas?

Great move by wahoo i think - i like RGT and would consider SYSTM now where I wasn’t interested at all before.

This is very interesting timing for me. I was banging out some long threshold intervals today and found myself visualising some long climbs I’ve ridden dozens of times on Gran Canaria. It worked really well at distracting me from the worlds slowest interval countdown timer and left me thinking I’d quite like to try some ‘real world’ riding graphics alongside these type of intervals in future. Then I see the email from Wahoo…

I can’t justify both TR and Wahoo subs so this would be a very difficult choice, but while AT, the current plans and lack of true outdoor ride assimilation continues it makes it at least something to look into.

Might pick up the 14 day free trial they keep offering me…

I had no idea RGT even existed. How many apps are out there for riding inside?

  • This is an older article, but gives most of the current options.

One of which was Reid Weber (co-founder TR) if i’m reading the article correctly.

Been a bit burned out by TR’s structured training over winter (actually paused my account now that the weather doesn’t suck) and thinking ahead was debating starting TR again or going with Zwift and keeping my off-season riding “fun” as well. Just to note, I don’t ride competitively so over winter am really looking just to maintain.

This merger seems like a middle road of both TR and Zwift…you get System that isn’t as good as TR and RGT which isn’t as good as Zwift…however you’re getting both without 2 subscriptions. I assume it’s a matter of time before they start integrating some of the features of both tools to be more seamless (better training in RGT). I will say that Magic Road does seem really cool though.

I also agree, this opens the door and almost pushes Zwift/TR into working together. I see it cannibalizing subscribers in my shoes where as if they were to join forces it’d be a no brainer.

I put on a series of races during the 2020 lockdown on RGT using Magic Roads to recreate our club’s local road race and crit circuits.

It was really popular but the graphics were pretty basic and glitchy, and building the routes to do multi-lap races was ridiculously fiddly, involving various GPX editing programs and manually correcting elevation issues.

If they can simplify the process and do all the de-glitching for you, they could be onto a winner.

Thanks for that.

I’m surprised and shocked at how many I have never heard of, but the ‘biggies’ seem to appeal to more people I suppose. Some that I have tried were so bad, perhaps they need to be bought out and improved with better leadership. Hmm…

Off to ride Zwift.

:open_mouth:

Dude, that is BIG. Man, I gotta make time to get some reading done.

Zwift needs or will integrate with TR. This kind of forces the issue a bit.

IMHO, TR should be concerned with this for their users that also pay for Zwift or another avatar-based platform. The Wahoo combined subscription cost for SYSTM and RGT of $14.99 USD / month is the same or less than TR alone. @Nate_Pearson also mentioned during the AT Beta rollout about future price increases to fund / compensate for the development effort and feature increase.

For me, I’m not in any rush to leave TR. However, I think PL 2.0, which allegedly will evaluate outdoor rides and efforts during extended warmups and cooldowns, will be huge feature improvements in keeping these users. TR has been adamant that this is their top development priority but with outdoor riding “season” upon the northern hemisphere I think TR is missing an opportunity by not having even a beta available.

I have ‘stolen’ a bunch of TR workouts and set them up in Zwift. (I like the scenery)

It’s good that I can currently afford both subscriptions. If there was an app/platform that did both their functions as well I’d consider switching if it saved money. I guess that is a vote for their merger, if the prices come down. (Yeah, I know that’s not likely to happen, but I can wish)

100km & 4 hours limit. You can make it a loop and… pretty sure you’ll be timed out before finishing the second 100km loop. It takes a few minutes for the server to spin up and you can always run another, continuation, route back to back if you time it right. I have spun up a route in less than 10 minutes but the safe elapsed time between spin up is 15 minutes. That’s a good break after a 3+ hour spin. Yes, the scenery is limited, two generic types.
