this is so boring its the hardest part of the season
I have quite routine menu (50% carbs : 25% fat : 25% proteins) over years that keeps my weight fluctuations within 500gr range and i have no sudden hungers. Except on recovery week, i feel constantly hungry. Why is that? Recovering body needs more nutrients? Or more intense periods suppress appetite?
Man my mood just seems to bomb come recovery week, cranky all of a sudden and sluggish. I’m halfway through GB MV, missed my Sunday ride because of family commitments and then nothing scheduled Monday. So 2 days off and then all I got is 1 hour Pettit which isn’t exactly stimulating. Made a deal with myself if I done today’s workout steady I could do a few efforts over the next few days
Hi my names Jack and I’m in a recovery week. I’m taking it one day at a time.
I’m on Friday of my recovery week. I am feeling pretty fatigued right now, as if I’m getting more fatigued as the week progresses. I rode outside easy Monday and commuted to work (8mi each way) on Tuesday, I didn’t ride Wedsnesday, and Thursday I tried doing Molekulmne but bailed after 30 mins.
I have a group ride tomorrow, it’s my friends bday ride, so I can’t really miss it and I’m sure it’s going to be spirited, which I’m not looking forward to.
I’ve started listening to some other training podcasts this week and the lack of training has me feeling like I’m not doing enough. I need this week to be over!
Isn’t it weird??? Are you hungry for food you wouldn’t normally eat? Pancakes, cinnamon rolls, ice cream (I know sugar…) Even wine… What the heck?
It’s like some exercised induced "mens"tral “cycle”…
Thank goodness there’s no cramps ![]()
HI my name is Brian I am a cyclist in recovery. I hope i can make it to Sunday
Last week was supposed to be a recovery week but it ended up being a 9.5 hour week! I pulled the plug and have only ridden 1.75 hours so far this week over 3 short/easy rides. And why did my legs hurt (a tiny bit) after 30 minutes @ Z2?
At least HRV4Training gave me a solid 8 this morning which is at the very top of my range.
Anyway, I’m just about to head out for an easy hour on gravel and I’m going to do a smell the roses ride and not chase any KOMs.
I’m still doing my 2-3 hour group ride tomorrow but I’ll do the climbs at SS and stay out of the red. That will be really hard if I’m feeling good. ![]()
Maybe I’m the odd ball out, or maybe because I have a coach and I’m finally pushing myself harder than I ever did on the TR plans, but I long for recovery weeks. I feel completely smoked by the time he gives me a few easy days and I love it. I had Andrews today and woke up ecstatic.
I always long for my recovery week the week leading up to it but once in it it’s really hard. Physically I need the recovery but mentally it’s hard because I see my friends all putting in big weeks and I feel like should be doing more.
Day 2 into the recovery week and I’m sure I’ve lost all my fitness gained from the last 4 months. The anxiety…
Has anyone ever felt WORSE during and after a recovery week than they did before?
I did a workout yesterday–and i think i went harder than I should have, I was supposed to turn down the intensity but forgot–and really felt sh*tty. Heart rate and RPE was through the roof, and felt a little lightheaded even. I feel fine today, so I don’t think I’m sick or anything like that.
One confounding factor is, I jumped on the bike as soon as I had a break from work, so my nutrition wasn’t super dialed. I could have had rebound hypoglycemia, when your blood sugar drops from the double-insulin spike of eating + exercise, with inappropriate timing. Higher HR and RPE and feelings of lightheadedness are one of the symptoms.
But definitely felt waaaayy crappier than normal.
I would say ifs probably the later reason then the Just coming off a recovery week. Although i normally feel weaker On the the first ride back after a recovery week then normal just because the sudden workload increase to the muscles.
Just finished SSBHVI for the first time and feel completely wiped out. I usually ‘enjoy’ recovery weeks in that I don’t have to mentally prepare for the sessions, but this week is definitely different - limped through Andrews on Tuesday and felt like I’d done a full-on race effort for the rest of the evening, then abandoned Fletcher on Weds after about half an hour as legs felt empty and had no motivation. Supposed to get back on track with Pettit tonight, but just can’t face it.
TL; DR: is it normal to feel this floored after completing SSBHVI for the first time? And should I worry about missing a scheduled ride in a recovery week due to fatigue? Will this affect the adaptations that are (hopefully) taking place?
my view is listen to your body. Dial the intensity way down to where it feels okay–where you feel better at teh end of the ride than you did at the beginning–and skip a ride completely if you’re not up to it. Having to bail on that ride probably means the first one you did was too intense given your level of fatigue.
The goal is to shed the fatigue, adapt, and be ready to work again as soon as possible. Ergo, the benefits you’re after won’t be harmed by reducing the intensity of workouts, they in fact might be helped.
TR plans are just taking an educated guess at what’s a good rest week programming for you. If it’s too much and you’re too tired, feel free to modify it.
If you are that tired, IMO take a couple of days off. And then do a full easy week so that you start the next block fully rested.
Recovery week just came and went and dunno how I feel about it.
Mentally I rarely feel like I need a break but physically I know from past experience that a short break is great for you.
My previous recovery week I executed as the plan suggested and I gained 6 watts at the next ramp test.
My latest recovery week was more like 5 days, during which I rode outside with the family and did two scheduled plan recovery rides. Bit of a mess tbh and the end result was another 6 watts in my ramp test yesterday.
I’m kinda over the 7 days thing in general.

I’m am so thankful I have a recovery week this week! Between my newborn, doing yard work, and hitting the workouts hard I’m exhausted and need some time to relax. I typically have a hard time toning it down enough during the recovery week but this week I am absolutely going to.
Today Is the last day of recovery week In SSB2Mv.
I almost relapsed feeling the itch to go hard, and swapped Boarstone (aka Boringstone) With a Ramp Test. Luckily I took it one day at a time and followed the plan.
Hope you all make it through ![]()
Friday tomorrow and I reckon I am going to make it through recovery week just about perfectly for the first time in nearly 2 years of training.
I usually always mess recovery week up in some way or another - doing too much, doing too little (nothing), throwing in a zwift race on the Saturday or even just cutting recovery week down to 4 days rest before ramp resting again.
Gonna be super interesting finding out my test result on Sunday, I mean Monday, I mean doh!
