Hmmmm……Wellens closing pretty fast on Pidcock!
ETA - not any more. Seems to have popped. But Wellens should still be able to hang on for the podium.

This maybe belongs in the unpopular cycling opinions thread, but I kind of think uae should’ve pulled pog after that crash
In hindsight he went on to win and appears to have no dramatic physical injuries, but they won’t really know about head trauma until tonight and definitely didn’t know at the time
The team shouldn’t risk his long term health (and their investment) for one race
I wish there was some sort of standard impact sensor on the helmets. If there is a crash and it’s above a certain threshold then the rider is pulled, if not they can continue.
You should listen to the Real Science of Sport Podcast on this point. Dr. Ross Tucker consults to the Rugby governing body, which is mandating players wear instrumented mouth guards. The Podcast has lots of episodes where Dr. Tucker talks through that they haven’t figured out yet a correlation between measure head acceleration and concussions. So why I agree with your thought in principle, in practice it doesn’t sound like anyone has figured out how to scientifically tell via acceleration (actually deceleration) when a concussion has happened.
I wouldn’t have guessed they winner would have unshaved legs wearing leg warmers and 200 lbs as well.
If the acceleration detected by the mouthguard is above a certain amount, the player is pulled out of the game for a head injury assessment by a doctor. They make the decision on head injury based on that medical assessment. So currently, the mouth guard data is used make a decision to do an evaluation, not a decision on a concussion. As they accumulate data, I’d bet they can get the correlation a lot tighter between mount guard acceleration data (including accumulated events), and concussion.
The big difference between rugby and cycling is that cycling does not have an established protocol for head injury assessment. So if the helmet detected an above threshold acceleration, there’s no standard procedure to put the player into for a medical assessment.
IMO, with all we know about head injuries it is quite concerning the UCI doesn’t have a concussion assessment tool/protocol. Also with how much these guys get paid you would think teams would push for it. I would not a rider I am paying millions riding 40 mph in a group if he is impaired….
I watched the crash in slow-mo several times, and it does not appear that Pog hit his helmet on the ground in this crash. https://youtu.be/qno45DYZpgg?si=i9YiIn-9tAJgD66T&t=102
It will be interesting to see if Pog’s crash makes UAE reconsider him supposedly doing Paris Roubaix……
This article is paywalled for me, but I think the headline/URL gives you enough!
From the cycling news article,
"Team Manager] Gianetti sees Pogačar’s Strade Bianche crash as a warning about the risks of riding Paris-Roubaix.
“Tadej wants to give Roubaix a go, but I keep telling him that he needs to wait before doing it, to not take risks, because he could really get hurt,” Gianetti said in Siena.
The head contracting the ground is a huge red flag, but the absence of contact does not indicate the absence of injury. I know I used to think I was fine after a crash if my helmet was not scratched or touched
The current understanding of brain trauma makes it very clear you can have a serious brain injury without your head touching the ground. Rotational and whiplash like he had is more than sufficient to cause the brain to impact the skull
I think he only does it if he wins MSR, and even then possibly not
Does anyone know where Matteo Jorgensen lives?
If Christian Vande Velde hasn’t mentioned in the previous 5 minutes I tend to forget
I still can’t go over the fact they react to a replay of a crash as if it’s in realtime.
Absolutely miserable conditions at Paris-Nice…they just neutralized the stage. A cacophony of squealing as riders descend behind the motos and riders have to brake the whole way.
Oooof…Visma cocked that up properly.
Saturday should be fun also, with the finish on a ski resort.
Here is a snapshot of the live footage in Auron:

Any one else getting an error trying to watch today’s stage of Paris-Nice on Peacock?
I think they did the correct thing. Problem is Jonas is not on super form and Jorgensen could not hang with the top guys… If they just ride to the finish the outcome would probably be the same… Almeida was just stronger.
Yes, both in IOS and on my LG tv app
