Perceived dehydration impairs endurance cycling performance in the heat in active males

Highlights

We used a gastric feeding tube to deliver water into the stomach during exercise without participants knowledge.

Dehydration ∼1.6% was induced, but participants were told they were ‘euhydrated’ or ‘dehydrated’ before a performance test.

Endurance performance was decreased by ∼6% when participants were told they were dehydrated.

Previous and future studies looking at low levels of dehydration might be confounded by participants knowing they hydration status due to overt methods.
