Outdoor TR workout mid-ride

Hey

I want to try and do outdoor TR workouts

But my terrain is very varied so it’s going to be hard to respect.

My plan was to try and slot shorter workouts mid-ride.

For instance slot in the 30 min « Chimayosos » within a 1:30h / 2h unstructured ride.

I was going to try the following

  1. Schedule Chimayosos outside and push to my Garmin Edge.

  2. Start my ride and record as usual.

  3. Start the workout somewhere mid ride

  4. Do the workout and keep riding afterwards.

  5. finish recording my ride as usual.

My hope would be at that point TR will associate everything correctly. But will it misinterpret things because of the IF etc of the rest of the ride?

Am I better off recording three rides?

  1. pre workout
  2. the workout
  3. post workout / end of ride

To keep things « clean » and separate?

I’d prefer recording one ride only as it is in reality one continuous ride.

Thanks !

If you’re following a training plan and want to complete a TR Workout outside, I would recommend completing the scheduled workout or choosing a Workout Alternate to what you think may be better for your terrain. This way, you can stick to what the plan calls for.

There’s a great blog post that you may find helpful for completing structured workouts outside:
Using Outside Workouts to Prepare For Your Event

Note: In the example you gave, of doing a 30-minute interval work and then riding unstructured for 1.5 hours, I would probably just switch the scheduled workout to a Solo Ride instead. Riding that much outside of the structured workout may call for a ride of its own. You can follow the training guidance on how to approach that ride based on the difficulty that the plan calls for.

More info here: How to Add Group and Solo Rides to your Training Plan

If you are going to do the 30-minute workout and add 1.5 hours of riding on top, there shouldn’t be a problem recording everything as one and then matching it to the TR Workout, as long as you did complete the interval work you’re matching it to.
