Norwegian-style split for time-constrained training — anyone doing this?

Anyone splitting their sweet spot or threshold workouts into two sessions on the same day?

With work and kids, getting a 90-min block done in one go is rough. Two 45-min slots though, morning and evening, that I can usually pull off.

The Norwegian double threshold stuff suggests this works fine for sustained sweet spot and threshold sessions. Same TSS, less fatigue per session, two lactate hits instead of one. Doesn’t work for over-unders obviously since the fatigue building up across the session is the whole point of those.

What I’ve been doing for a 90 min sweet spot at IF 0.85: find two 45 min sweet spot workouts around the same IF, keep each one under 0.88 so it doesn’t turn into two hard sessions, leave 3+ hours between them.

Works well but takes a bit of digging through the library each time to find decent matches. Anyone else doing this? Curious how you’re picking the workouts, or if you just go with a shorter alternative instead.

A split button on sustained workouts would honestly be a great feature but mostly just want to hear what others are doing.

I’m doing this with endurance work: I commute to work by bike (unless it is snowy or icy). While only 22–24 minutes one way, over the course of a week, it adds up to a serious amount of endurance work (typically 4–5 hours once you include the weekly grocery run and other errands).

Hence, even if it is not optimal in a vacuum, it is optimal under the constraints that you have. So I’d just do it.

Another thing I did was to move one of the sweet spot sessions to Saturdays, because I have two hours to train on Saturday morning. This really helped me make a leap in training.

Why not do the same workout twice? It will save up time searching.

I’m guessing TR doesn’t let you schedule them both for today if the first one isn’t completed yet, but after you complete the first one I expect you can schedule it again for today. Another solution would be to schedule it for today and tomorrow then drag the workout from tomorrow to today.

Couldn’t you just schedule two AI sweet spot workouts and have TR pick? The first one might be harder, but the second would adjust.

This worked better than I thought it would. Actually did something that at least for me made sense. I am going on this direction because I cannot do 1:30 straight. And would sometimes not do the workout because I try to fit it then at the end couldn’t.

The bigger question is if does this make sense from a training perspective? And could an auto-split option for sustained sweet spot and threshold workouts be something worth exploring? I imagine there are more users like me who can’t always fit a longer block in one go but can split it into two shorter sessions on the same day.
