It’s funny, when I hear the podcast discussions about “we will add feature x to our software someday” I don’t even think about it. Maybe because I just sense that Nate is one of those guys that has a ton of ideas that he wants to do and likes talking about it. Thinking of something is always much quicker/easier than actually doing it. I just take TrainerRoad for what it is today, add the (significant) value I receive from their free podcasts with no hidden sponsor conflicts and opt to buy it. Coach Chad and the insights from all the other hosts and guests are valuable to me.

Is that not because that’s the question they get asked most? As in, “does my unstructured work count for PL’s”?

And the answer to that is: “nope”.

I will admit when you have cool new ideas it’s hard to keep them secret but having learnt the hard way with bosses showing this killer new feature and then the end user asking about it ad infinitum when it’s far from ready it’s better to keep schtum until beta signups are either here or all but here.

The CT news had me thinking about this. Part of the value of my subscription isn’t just the training platform, workout analysis etc. It’s the podcast(s), the written content, this forum (where they’re happy to let people constantly diss their approach).

Luckily I’m not in a place where I have to question my sub, but those would also play into my thinking. I loved TR before AT and AI FTP, so new features are great and all (except group workouts  ) but there’s more to it in my n=1 than just that.

Exactly. When I went back to my game changing training, basically the same type of training as before TR, I kept my sub for almost two years and treated it as if it was a kickstarter. And then between the podcast and reading all the forum feature requests politely tabled for higher priority work, I was no longer able to mentally afford pledging money. When will TR share some results of the ‘experimental’ plans on the podcast? I realize Sarah (loved your interview podcast!) posted reasons why they haven’t yet, as if the data isn’t clear, however they are creating more workouts to support it  Teasers can be fun when they are just around the corner…

So everyone is mad that outside rides don’t count toward leveling up? Can’t you just choose a harder level workout in the alternates next time you’re on the trainer?

I reckon everyone’s going to be even madder when they get way less credit for outside rides than they’re expecting :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I don’t doubt it’s not going to change anything PL-wise for the majority of rides I think/hope it will allow for a hard outside ride to adjust the difficulty/type of upcoming sessions and sort of tie it all together. Which when it does come will be very nice.

 to be fair, I think folks need to think outside the PL box. A proper marriage of models and workouts has many possibilities.

Not everyone; I want the system to say I’m getting little betterment (if not detriment) from all the riding I do outside. AI FTP before they changed it seemed to be giving me too much betterment that wasn’t sustainable for training indoors. Hopefully it’ll result in a more sustainable level to train at and let me justify doing more indoor stuff as opposed to outdoors sometimes.

You’ll still have the same problem if you’re feeding it much higher Wattages a percentage of the time from your road bike. That may be a different solution. Unless I’ve misunderstood your hope.

Mainly I’m hoping that AT will no longer credit me with higher PL’s for outdoors WO’s than they are actually worth, realistic PL’s (WL2 or whatever they are called) and in conjunction with the recent changes to AI FTP will give me something realistic to train at indoors.

Separately although subjectively, I know that outside isn’t as efficient as in with the accurate assigning of PLs (WL2) to outdoor workouts lower than indoors, it’ll help me justify the decision to stay indoors sometimes.

Lol, I have probably confused things more now :joy:

here is a fun study:

be sure to look at the individual results, for example at 1 minute all the pros in the study put out more power:

but at 3 minutes some pros put out more power inside:

Ultimately it comes down to how you respond, not how those studied responded as a group.

Thanks for that. It’s interesting info, though I find it easier to do consistent efforts indoors, I can appreciate there being a lower RPE outside for many.

HLaB’s issue I was describing was more a road position vs TT position, but he’s also noted above what he’s really after :ok_hand:.

I’ve actually experimented and done a fair number of indoor vs outdoor max efforts, and 100% I generate more power outside. But that isn’t true for everyone, at every duration.

Outdoor riding? Whats that?
