New Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and Roam V3 Plus New Radar

It’s hilarious they recycled the name for the legacy HR monitor for a radar: and it actually kind of works.

I probably should have said “ACE Launch fiasco”. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I still struggle to understand how iGPS Sport can produce a thin, almost bezel-less device with an excellent screen that still has great battery life, and these major players are still releasing bricks. Sure, the software quality probably rules it out for many, but the hardware capability is clearly there.

Wahoo seem to be on a path to the abyss, would like them to innovate on the cycling side like they have with their treadmill, but not sure how they can do it.

From the photos they look alright (viewing angle is pretty consistent on a bike computer), but I haven’t ridden them in the sunshine so will take your word for it!

to me it seems as if the lowest part is just the aero mount of the unit. So take off a 1/3 off the thickness in these images but still some chonky units.

BikeRumor commented on how the aero mount is noticeably thicker now. I don’t know how they can call this an aero mount anymore. It looks as aerodynamic as a cybertruck dumpster.

Surely it would be more aero to make the mount much thinner but would require making it out of aluminum and they cheaped out on it.

How visible are they for you? On my trusty gen-1 Bolt the top LEDs are very hard to see in bright daylight.

Those images look like the device has an extra battery pack attached.

That’s what I thought at first too, but of course they would say that if that was the case. (And Ray or Shane would have mentioned it too). And if you look at side pics of just the unit, you’ll see that the unit itself looks like two pieces from the side. So what looks like a battery on the bottom is just the mount.

I’m a huge fan of my Roam for the simplicity and, now that it’s not a feature, the LEDs. Like them for alerts, nav, and keeping track of power or heart rate. A unique and handy feature. Probably going to buy a V2 off amazon since that seems like the last place to get one since the V3 has zero allure for me. It was the display that could be easily seen in any light and side LEDs that really set it apart for me.

I feel like Wahoo is closing the gap between them and garmin which is getting it closer to the question why not just buy a garmin? As far as I understand Garmin has gotten way better with the easy app set up, already has a similar full color touch screen and has far better compatibility with lights and such. But the wahoo does have a .2in bigger screen, more weight and is “aero” so there’s that. Never wanted my head unit to talk to me. Sure you can turn that off but then it’s a dead weight feature for more money. Now it’s the same price as an 840 non-solar.

Yeah, the mount is pretty thick. It’s got this honeycomb like structure at the bottom to reinforce it. Different from the ACE mount for example, which is metal. It appears like it has a battery bank on it, but basically it’s just a stylistic split-level thing there, and in particular, the computer generated images make that more pronounced.

I looked around, and I didn’t relocated any of the BOLT/ROAM V2 mounts with me yet, so…just have the ACE mount. So, off-hand, perhaps it’s not exactly any thicker. Will need to find someone around that has the older mount.

If you have access to a 3d printer - these models are seemingly genuine from wahoo.

With regards to the new mount being chunky and ‘unaero’, I think we’re entering a time in cycling where wind tunnel testing and simulations are going to put some pretty confusing designs into the market just to claim they are 1 watt faster at 30mph

That’s where I’m at with this update. Wahoo has been slacking and Garmin has caught up. Plus there’s always better third party support (like from TR) for Garmin units than for Wahoo. And Garmin offers IQ apps so people can add custom data fields like live W prime or CdA. Garmin has such a market share and mind share lead that any challenger has to be significantly better than them. Wahoo had that lead, now they’ve squandered it.

This! One thing I love about my Roam is being able to slightly glance down and see that amber light across the top from radar alerts. I am hoping the top of the new Roam screen will still accommodate this.

Agree, I was a wahoo user back in the Bolt and Roam V1 days but both units suffered from unacceptable GPS dropouts which ultimately drove me to Garmin who didn’t have these issues. I stayed with Garmin since they have a better ecosystem, better app, way more features on the unit and ability to customize, etc. I recently got a brand new 1040 for the same price as the Roam 3. Also I could never actually see what the Wahoo LEDs were doing in bright sun

Another thing that I’m disappointed in with Wahoo is how much ANT+ data they don’t record. If you look at a FIT file from Garmin it has way more info in there, like the actual battery levels of sensors (if they transmit that info), speeds of vehicles detected by radar, pedaling dynamics data, etc. Wahoo pretty much just records whatever they display.

Sure, most people aren’t going to look at that data. Most of the time I wouldn’t either, but it comes in handy sometimes (especially battery levels) and it might even help their own engineers squash bugs. Storage space is cheap and we’re talking about a few kB per hour of data. They don’t have to process it, just blindly write it to disk.

Does having this in front of you make you bail on efforts when you’re behind on a segment? Do you have it against your previous time or against all time when going for KOM?

The new SRAM groupset comes with a Karoo and i’d imagine some full new builds may start shipping with a computer. Being an OEM will absolutely give them marketshare.
