Good suggestion. Not perfect if you’ve moved workouts around, but a good starting point.
Coach Chad, TR’s head coach, thinks an accurate FTP estimate is important
“Because we use this measure of fitness as the basis for all of your training, it’s important that this number estimates your actual sustainable-power threshold as closely as possible.”
and smartly avoided the “how long / TTE” aspect of FTP by saying:
“the point at which your muscles are successfully walking that lactic tightrope and maintaining the balance between hard work and too-hard work.”

They seemed to be at great pains today in the podcast to distance themselves from the Coggan metrics, mentioning that IF has little context, more TSS is not ways a good thing etc etc and tbh I’m really pleased about this.
I’ve no doubt they are or already have come round to the flawed nature of the whole FTP concept.
Personally I’ve just decided to give up time trialling, tbh I always enjoyed the training more than the racing anyway so I’m really happy to be in the AT beta with no events planned and just to see where it takes me.
I need to listen to the podcast still, but one thing Coggan said a lot on another forum is that percentages of FTP for a given zone are descriptive, not prescriptive. I always took that to say that his metrics were taken a bit too literally.
They also have pretty wide ranges as well, both in percentage of FTP and time one can spend in that zone.
Apologies if this has been covered previously, but are the new plans designed to offer workouts between an ‘average’ range of workout levels, i.e. say from level 4 to level 7.5, within a training block prior to doing the next prescribed ramp test? What I’m getting at, is it better to stick with your current FTP and get to a point where you can do level 10’s on most/all zones, before you retest, or to get to say level 7.5, on workouts, before retesting and starting with a higher FTP but lower workout level?
This showed up under my ramp test this morning.
Does it describe the expected outcome for each zone, or is that how I’ve been judged based on my performance before the AI overlords?
I’ve not been following a TR plan since back in March so I’m not going to cry myself to sleep if it’s the later. Today’s ramp was the first TR workout in awhile.
Edit: Has anyone else not in the AT beta seen something similar on their workout webpage? I updated the attached image to show what I’m seeing on the Web page.
This ^^^
That’s great news. I’m listening to the podcast now to get upto speed.
I also noticed that Plan Builder is working. Nice!
Time to start feeding AI with a new plan.
Same, but got onto TR support and they fixed it overnight ![]()
Interesting, I’m not in the AT beta (sigh), but just went back to my last ramp test (back in March) and also see progressions beneath it. I assume this is something that has crept out from underneath the beta (maybe unintentionally).
I’d say it’s showing what your progression levels were set to following that ramp test with your updated FTP.
I know that even if you aren’t in the AT beta, progression levels are still being calculated in the background, since they’re being used by Train Now.
It’s interesting that your ramp in March has them. I did a ramp towards the end of April that doesn’t show them. ![]()

AT really thought I sucked after that test
[/quote] That’s a pretty harsh assessment. Possibly linked to one of the bugs where all level would reset to 1.
If not you have permission to curl up in a ball and cry. ![]()
In my case I’ve been cheating on TR for the last couple of months. It’s been more of an open relationship during that time so I expect some confusion on TR’s part.
I’m intrigued now. It’ll be kinda interesting sticking to a plan for the next couple of weeks and seeing what happens with the next ramp.
Mine from Tuesday looks a lot like this. I haven’t had any super-passes, but I figured I was above 1! Endurance (3.7) is the only one >2. Hoping this is just a bit of an early release that isn’t fully cooked yet.
I’m halfway tempted to do 2 minutes of a ramp test just to see if it will show my current levels then delete it.
My last ramp was Nov 2019 and the levels are showing on it. And levels only on that last ramp test.
I went back further, mine are showing right back to May 2019 (but not for the one before that in Mar 2019).
And yes, some of the more recent ones show levels being reset to 1.0, which I believe was a recent bug. But others show levels in the ballpark of 5-6, etc. I suspect the way levels reset after a ramp has changed over time, and probably also depends on what FTP increase you’ve had on that test (if any). Will be interesting to see what happens for my next one, due in a few weeks.
Yeah, the one I did in Feb showed up with a wider range of progression levels. That one dropped 20 W because of some new equipment (Kickr → Assioma). This recent one that was mostly reset to 1.0 showed a modest increase. Weird.
Let me know if this works! I’m interested in a static shot of my current progression levels! I don’t see why you wouldn’t get them ![]()

I’m gonna try it in the morning, I’ll let you know.
The android app workout search function isn’t working correctly. If I set the filter to “Threshold”, “Progression Level 4”, “Duration 1:30” - 57 workouts show. If I do the same search on the web - 59 workouts show. “Starlight-2” is missing on the app and another.
