We are hard at work on the Wahoo head unit issue. As of now, TrainNow DOES recognize that you’ve done a workout on a Wahoo in making its daily zone recommendation (Climbing, Attacking, Endurance). In other words, if you do a hard outside ride on your Wahoo, TN will take that into account and likely not recommend a Climbing/Attacking workout the next day. However, doing workouts on a Wahoo does not impact your individual Progression Levels (which impact the workouts TN suggests)…yet. We’re working on it. The worst case is TN could theoretically recommend workouts that are too easy, but we haven’t really seen much feedback or data that this is occurring. What we’re actually seeing is that the vast majority of TR athletes are using TrainNow to pick much more suitable workouts for them than if they just picked a random workout from the catalog.
Could you elaborate more on the Wahoo problem?
Is it because Wahoo changed something on their end that broke it? Or is it just an incomplete feature right now?
Ok that’s good to hear. I hope it’s fixed soon. TN is recommending a lot of 3s and 4s, but it looks to me in comparing my rides to TR I am riding 8-10’s pretty regularly outdoors for some zones (2-3x50+ min tempo, 4x20 SS + extra etc). I haven’t touched a TR workout in weeks (months?) because of this gap, and the bug. I assume not using TR is just leading to this discrepancy widening. My FTP is likely underestimated at the moment, but my guess is only by a bit (or a couple levels worth).
I would very much like to start associating workouts with my outdoor rides so I can get a better handle on ‘appropriate’ intensity for stuff like vo2, as it’s hard to judge what is enough to see gain when the intervals could be this long, but am waiting and hoping this feature will actually be usable at some point soon.
All signs point to fresh legs. (Xert, ICU and by feel).
TN still thinks endurance is my best bet.![]()
EDIT: Super pumped for these new features to roll out in full. I’m nitpicking because I want people to have 99.9% confidence in the product, myself included.
I’ve since played around with the calendar and in the case above I’m getting larger impacts from outside rides than I feel I should. Simple as that.
Is the wahoo head unit issue specific to structured workouts? Or all workouts done on wahoo units regardless?
If so, would this affect TrainNow’s recs?
I ask because I pretty much only get endurance rides suggested. I can only think of one time where it recommended something different.
If I do hard workout - it recommends endurance because workout was hard. If I do endurance - it recommends endurance, apparently thinking I am during recovery week
so the same for me. It has recommended climbing workout once.
TrainNow’s recommended workout on a given day does take into account your unstructured, non-TrainerRoad rides imported from a Wahoo head unit!
Part of the updated TrainNow logic looks at several different ride metrics (not one’s specific to adaptive training, yet) in making its determination. In the future, both Adaptive Training and TrainNow will account for all rides, both indoor and outdoor, structured and unstructured.
Gotcha. So it sounds like the “always recommending Endurance” issue is just specific to the composition of what the system is seeing rather than a device issue. Thanks!
Mostly endurance for me, usually at very low IF, although I’ve seen an Climb or Attack recommendation at least once in last couple weeks. Last week was a rest week. Garmin head unit and all workouts have been done outside for last ~10 weeks. Haven’t used trainer since March 10.
I did 15 minutes of a threshold workout yesterday before I realised it was a bad idea and pulled the pin. Two days totally off the bike prior to that.
Today’s TN recommendation? Back to endurance. ![]()
TN does seem to er on the side of caution when it comes to any form of intensity. That includes unstructured rides outdoors in my case.
I do wonder if it’ll eventually take AT survey results into account to better hone how fresh we actually feel. Something similar to using the freshness slider in Xert.
This is odd
a couple hours ago it was showing 2 hour Endurance workouts.
Now the 60 minute Endurance/Climbing/Attacking workouts are much lower levels,
Hmm, the only change other than time of day is that a couple hours ago I associated a handful outside rides with TP synced workouts.
Have you tried deleting a few of them from your calendar to see how TN responds? I did that a couple of days back to see how far back my outdoor rides were causing the endurance recommendation. It was upto 4 days in my case.
Unmatched and kept the ride and workout. Let’s see if it reverts to earlier Train Now workouts.
It happened pretty quickly when I changed things. Several spins on the pokies/slots and it was upto speed.
I do feel a little sympathy for TR with all the people who must be stressing the platform with constant changes. Just a little ![]()

I am hoping that with full AT visibility of ‘Productive’/‘Not Recommended’ in conjunction with the levels being presented, you’ll have some better insight into what’s being suggested in TrainNow. ![]()
Like everybody else, I queued up for the AT Beta the minute it was announced. Like most, didn’t get it in the first round. So settled for TrainNow. I love it, especially with the updated app, which now as a bonus gets along much better with my Direto, and I posted why a couple weeks ago:
New Feature - TrainNow - #421 by oldcrank
Naturally, I get the long-awaited and much-coveted invitation to the AT Beta party just as I’m happily settling in with second-choice TN.
What do I do? Stick with TN, who is feeling like the girl for me? Jilt her for the storied lure of AT, now that she’ll finally have me? Two-time?
I’m hoping someone here with more knowledge of the inner workings of both can tell me what I’d be missing if I pass on the AT Beta. And if the answer is in my case not much, is there a way to pass that makes my slot available to someone else?
Am I correct that the fundamental difference is that AT assumes a Plan designed to peak me for a future event by laying out periodized workouts on a calendar, and then tweaking the workouts (not the calendar) depending on how I do? I know TN has no plans, events, or periodization – fine with me, since I look at the weather and other obligations to decide what workout to do what day and whether inside or out, not whether it’s Tuesday or 13 days before my Big Day. But I’m hoping it still uses the same machine learning magic to tweak the day to day suggestions by the best increments to make my old man fitness trending up. If it can, with the data it sees. If it only looks at how I did on the last few workouts and then randomly picks a few in the same ball park, knowing I have a good chance of doing them too, then I don’t want to miss whatever additional magic Lady AT can bring to my life.
Thanks for anything more I should consider.
My first non-endurance “Recommended” Workout
.
The system seems to work
. This is the last day of my rest week between SSBMV2 and SusPBMV, though I did catch up on Lecomte on Friday, AT clearly thinks I’m ready to go again.
The recommendations do have me wondering if I should update my plan and go for the lower level/progression Sustained Power Build. I just don’t want to have to go through and shift all my workouts and replace the threshold ones/sweet spot ones again
. It might be worth it to not she’ll myself. Though I really want to make some gains this Build.
Still getting TrainNow suggestions below 2.0. It seems confused.
Did you delete them totally from your calendar?
I did that and manually added them back later.
I’ve only tried doing an outdoor workout on the Garmin 520+ that I totally stuffed up. Didn’t pay attention to the results afterwards as I figured it was too messy for TN.
That’s the extent of my associated rides experience.
The outdoor rides that were throwing off my recommendations were unstructured and had stupid IF numbers due to lots of accelerations.
Once I deleted them the system reverted to climbing workouts instead of endurance.
Given how quickly things seem to progress within the TR platform who knows how my next outdoor workout will be assessed.
My ride on Saturday will no doubt throw TN off for several days as it spat out a similar IF again.
As an aside, I’d say the predictions for my progression levels aren’t too bad on TN after feeding in a few TR indoor WO’s. It also looks like there must be some sensible conclusions from the outdoor rides I’ve done. (Maybe imagined).
I’m currently getting mainly 4’s for endurance. 2’s for threshold because it doesn’t count if your average power outdoors is high enough and you haven’t been doing threshold TR WO’s for a month or so. 6’s for VO2 because I enjoy punchy stuff on the MTB and the road.
The future’s so bright…![]()
