New bike to trainings camp or not

Hi guys,

My new bike canyon aeroad sl cf 8 arrived yesterday. But next week I go on trainings camp in spain 900,km 7 days and I have not ride the new bike yet. Just like down the road to test gears. Everything is set up to go saddle hight etc…
Both bikes have same setup Di2 Ultegra12.
Just different chainring.
Almost same weight.
Should I take old bike or new 1

While I get the temptation to take the new bike, I would go with the old one. It will make sure, that you are comfortable through out the week and take full advantage of the camp.
As a bonus, it takes away the stress of scratching or damging the new bike.

This is assuming your old bike works fine and the fit is good for you.

I’d say take the new bike. This is the bike you want to ride and are excited about. It gives you a great opportunity to dial in your fit which usually takes hours to notice if something is slightly off. I’d just bring along a couple common hex wrenches (4 and 5mm) on each ride so you can make minor adjustments.

I just did this with my new bike last week. Even though I transferred my fit, I had to make minor tweaks after each day (hood angle, saddle, etc). By day 3 I was completely dialed in.

+1 for the new bike. You bought it to ride it, and what better place than Spain in March? There’ll be bike shops all over the place to help you with any issues that might arise that you can’t adjust yourself.

Depends on what your training camp is. Are you solo or in a group? If this is a team training camp, I for one, would be pretty annoyed if a teammate brought a new bike and wanted to stop every 20 minutes to adjust his fit. If you’re solo, go for it. You can get a real world fitting.

Your fit would have to be severely off if that was the case. Any big fit issues can be sorted by riding around the neighborhood before. Minor adjustments can be made at coffee/pee breaks and/or at the end of the day in preparation for the following.

Clearly you’ve never experienced this. Ask me how I know.

Very good points both ways made by other posters. Personally, I’d take my old bike as I would find it less distracting from what I was trying to achieve at the camp. It’s totally dialed and there would be no teething issues that a brand new bike might exhibit. And, of course, I’d be less worried about it. I’ve done this a number of times in the past because I had two very similar bikes for years and would take the older one on trips.

I think you’re allowed one courtesy stop for whatever issue you’re having, mechanical or fit or whatever. After that, you’re on your own to catch up. You are also allowed to give them sh*t the entire time you’re waiting.

Yea, that comment was the first stop. Which was slightly annoying but whatever. It was a quick saddle adjustment and probably shorter than a flat fix. If that was it I wouldn’t have minded.

The real kicker was the stop 45 minutes later for a cockpit adjustment. When the stem came off I said screw this and rode off. I’m sorry but if we’re stopping so you can move some stem spacers around on your new bike, you’re an a$$hole.

Bike arrived yesterday, training camp is next week….why not dial in the bike this weekend and then you are ready to go?
