New AI Workouts are HARD!

I used Sufferfest a long time ago, but a few weeks ago I switched to TrainerRoad. I started with an indoor FTP of 241, since I hadn’t trained recently.

As soon as the new AI system kicked in, it immediately set my FTP to 261. When I tried to set it back, I was told that the AI wouldn’t work that way. So I left it at 261. Then it predicted an FTP of 280 by mid-February, which seems unrealistic—280 is my all-time best indoor FTP and I usually only reach that around September.

The main issue is that the workouts feel far too hard and don’t seem to match the intended training zones. For example, today’s “sweet spot” workout:

If you look at the heart rate zones, this doesn’t look like sweet spot at all. I’m worried that the AI is pushing me toward overtraining.

Is this normal behavior? Has anyone else experienced this? Or is this AI just trained together with Grunter :fearful:?

It did the same to me today - if it learns over the next couple of workouts that’s fine but if not I’ll be leaving. I like training to stay healthy but I’m not going to beat myself to death every workout.

My OU’s today were unachievable, for me anyway. I’m kind of too old for this stuff.

So now my predicted FTP is the same in 3 weeks as it is now. Bonkers!

It looks like you last did over/unders on Saturday and rated that level 3.3 workout as “moderate,” which would tell us that your FTP is definitely set too high..

You struggled with a level 5.6 traditional VO2 workout today, which is one of the hardest types of workouts out there, in my opinion.

We’ve recognized that and adjusted next week’s workout down slightly, but your threshold workouts seem to be in the right spot right now.

Let me know how things go next week!

It looks like you’ve gotten through your last few workouts without too many issues..

That 5.5 Sweet Spot (2x20 @ 90% & 94% of FTP) before your FTP update was rated as moderate, and todays 4.3 Sweet Spot (4x10 @ 88%, 90%, 94%, & 92%) was rated as hard which seems appropriate.

Saturday’s threshold workout was very hard, so I’ll be curious to hear how your workout goes this Saturday. I think that one will give us a good idea of where you’re at currently.

Let me know how it goes!

Im also here from Sufferfest and similarly had TR suggest and ftp I considered bananas. I have decided to trust the system and Do as I’m Told. Its been a few weeks of my build phase and I have been very honest in my workout surveys. Everytime I look at my workouts, they appear like they’re going to put me through the ringer but so far none of them have caused me to fail an interval and I’ve actually felt pretty good after completing them. At first things were pretty tough but once I settled into my plan, I’m getting more confident that the system will not kill me.

This is what those in the business call “minimum viable product” :+1:

I have executed all scheduled workouts precisely according to plan. The projected FTP for February 19 was initially 280, then revised downward to 271. Today’s FTP ramp test produced a result of 256, yet the system continues to recommend an FTP setting of 271. The underlying logic of the plan construction is therefore unclear, as the projections and measured data appear misaligned.

Its years since I’ve done a ramp test. For the majority of people, they estimate ok, but for some people they predict way too high or way too low. For me I think they predicted too low and I’d get far better results out of a 20mins test. I cant remember the exact number but it was something like a ram test predicted 235w but a 20min test predicted 275w. The last version of AI FTP D was right in the middle for me. This new version is marginally lower than the previous AI FTP D which is reasonable and I am going how to see how it pans out and allow it to adjust up or down as developing data informs.

The number spat out by a ramp test is not “measured data".

It’s measured data multiplied by an arbitrary constant.

Therefore, it ain’t worth ****

Whatever, as you’ve done a ramp test TR will be using that number as the basis of your training for the next 4 weeks, I guess.
