Music During Training, Eating in a Fast Race, Carb Loading and More – Ask a Cycling Coach 244

SiS appear to be using it and they’re pretty reputable I think we’d agree. I’ve been using it for 25 years easily, not daily obviously but regularly. What’s it done to me?

Slightly random but I’m English and love listening to the podcast but I’ve often wondered…does the word “took” exist in American syntax?

I took the inside line…

We took the lift to the top…

Like those, or something else?
(Past tense of “take”)

Mmmmmm, I do love my Belgians, and Unibroue is definitely on my short list of fave Belgian (even though they’re in Quebec) breweries. Are you familiar with Dieu du Ciel? They’re also out of Quebec and their Rigor Mortis never fails to blow my mind…and get me good and drunk.

I just perused Beer Advocate’s top 100 Minnesota beers and didn’t recognize a single brewery, so I’m gonna say ‘no’, we don’t have access to those in Reno.

Have y’all ever tried Infinit Nutrition? They have customizable drink mixes with free consultations and will tweak the formulation for free. It’s definitely helped me get more calories in while I’m on the bike

I’m considering buying The RP Diet for endurance" , but I get tired of spending money on gimmicks / old news. Could you just give a bit more detail on the approach Chad?
Cheers

I’ve never heard bad things about maltodextrin. That’s what I’ve always bought as my carb powder for drinks. What are other people using?

The studies listed are not for exercise related issues, but sedentary individuals. I found many resources showing it to be not only effective, but far more tolerable than any of the other sugars. As stated, my experience with 36 years of triathlon and coaching /advising many more have NEVER resulted from gastric distress from maltodextrin, but too concentrated doses of other sugars such as gels, bars, etc.

Best Minnesota beer is loon juice!

Really appreciated all the information on glycogen repletion!

WRT NA beers…not sure if anyone has mentioned it but Heineken 0.0 is a game changer. If you have a history of alcoholism too, and can tolerate an alcohol analogue in your diet/recovery program; it has actual zero alcohol. Or very very close to it.

It’s avail in North America now and I can’t recommend it enough. Germany has several 0.0 beers right now too, which can be solid, but afaik only Heineken is avail globally right now.

The Growler magazine from Minnesota just did a NA beer tasting. They also agreed with the Lauganitas Hopped beverage and Athletic Brewing Company.

It’s fine for what it is, I’m just not a weissbier fan, alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Lager, Wheat and Saison are just styles I’m not mad about.

I was so excited to see you guys taking about NA beers on this most recent podcast! I’m a big NA fan (stopped drinking alcohol about a year and a half ago to ensure I could nail my early morning TR workouts).

In full transparency, I’m also a brand ambassador for Athletic Brewing Company, so feel free to let me know if you have any questions about their stuff @chad.

At this point, I may have an NA drinking problem! (Sidenote–I purchased all of this on my own free will!)

Gotta check that out - very much on the same page of higher abv > sessions etc… Though I didn’t expect to hear the zero beers taste that bad, glad you were the willing(ish) guinea pig for all of us

I used to be more of a wine drinker before I became teetotal, so I don’t have much to compare it to.
I first discovered Erdinger at the London Bike show. They were hailing it as a recovery drink and giving it away free. They were also giving away as much Erdinger as we could drink at the finish line of the Tour of Cambridge TT.
Maybe I’ve created a positive association. Clever promoting

I tried TailWind Berry with caffeine last year. It tasted amazing but didn’t really keep up with demand like Beta Fuel seems to do. I do realize a bag of Tailwind is way cheaper than a box of 12 Beta Fuel Packs.

@chad, can you do a deep dive on the health benefits of Manhattans next? I’m not much of a beer drinker.

My man.

Here is a call for a write-up on the carb absorption that was gone through in the podcast. Not often my brain hurts tracking Chad, but today (with all going on at work) I had to go through it several times. A write-up will aid referencing later.

Question: What happens if you do a workout the day you are carb loading? Does the accelerated absorption start up again?

Sorry but have to say this feels like the equivalent of a heart surgeon posting pics of him eating Fettuccini Alfredo with a side of Bolognese for lunch. :stuck_out_tongue:

All of the time spent discussing marginal gains from beet juice, whole grains and blue light seems kind of silly when the more obvious hinderance to performance is so highly revered.

But I digress…
