Measures of changes in performance

Given that performance is the best predictor of performance, it would be fruitful to have a thread of key measures of performance (aside from race results). Race results are great, but there are so many other factors, that it’s good to have other independent measures. Among others:

  • W/Kg Power Curve (Raw Watts too)
  • Composite Score
  • Garmin Vo2 max
  • Pwr:HR Curve (Intervals ICU)
  • Lactate Profile
  • Fat Max
  • FTP, CP, MLSS
  • HR Drift
  • HR Max
  • Durability (Pick your protocol)
  • Repeatability of efforts ???

What else would you add? Show your improvements!

Power / HR Z2 averaged over 21 days is something I have been looking at for a while.

There’s a lot to over think on that list.

For me… Average speed* and RPE. Everything else is noise.

I like this chart for y/y tracking:

Yes, that is a good chart to use (and that your red line is down and right versus your blue line is always good to see, isn’t it!?).

I look at various time periods. Generally my red line is the last 42 days and I compare that against different training blocks / months / quarters / years.

I like the idea of a chart like that, but doesn’t the variability in HR kinetics (HR lag for a given power, variability from day to day) make it less precise?

This is included in the calculation, as well as cadence. Also the law of large numbers comes in handy if you ride enough.

So timed segments are silly and boring? I mean isn’t that why we do all this training?

Fat Max and Garmin VO2 is more exciting than riding a bike?
