Can I ask did you use loctite blue or red? Tempted to just go for red but wanted to check as yours held up well!
If you donât want to go back and have your dealer do it via the Trek advisory, then I used Loctite Threadlocker âNormalâ - has a blue background to that word on the bottle, is that Loctite blue then? The bottle is red but I think they all are. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Loctite-2259681-Sealant-5g-Maintains-Transparent/dp/B07BP9JPC9
Bike is still fine.
I wouldnât put red loctite on a bike, itâs designed to hold bolts on cars /lorries and youâll potentially strip an Allen bolt head before loosening it (it also often requires a blowtorch to soften enough to let go).
Blue all the way for bikes imo
Thanks great thanks⌠Yeah this is standard loctite blue - basically can be removed just by moving it firmly again with a wrench and breaking the hold. Loctite red is a permanent hold that would require either 300c heat or a drill to remove (hence why nervous about using it but is a last resort).
I have 2 Madone. 2017 Madone 9 and 2019 Madone SLR. I never had a problem with the Madone 9. The isospeed in the SLR become loose after every ride (100km)
Madone SL7, 2020, I noticed the plastic cover around the seatpost loose, so I tried to take it off, it snapped and broke in two halves, but ok, stupid plastic. Underneath though found this frame crack This spot looks so weak for something that has to hold the whole body weight, what a flawed design, extremely disappointing.
All I can say is that it will sting a little less when they send you a new frame (if youâre the original owner and itâs under warranty).
With the number of reports of this issue, itâs clearly a design flaw. If bikes were cars these would have been recalled a long time ago. Even if itâs out of warranty, itâs worth checking with your local Trek dealer and seeing what they can do for you.
That really stinks. I wonder if the new Trek speed concept will have similar issues. Which would really suck for the athletes that are probably ditching their old SC for the new one
I did get in touch with the LBS, they were very nice. They got back to me saying that Trek is giving me a new frame. That was a relief! It will be a different color though, but I donât mind. I am adding an SLR handlebar as an upgrade so it will feel like getting a new bike! But now I know that I have to be mindful of the seat post. And yes, I do think itâs a design flaw, hopefully, theyâll find a way to improve that.
I have a similar issue in my 2021 SLR. Took the bike to the LBS few weeks ago, they replaced the bolt with a new part and told me itâs a slightly different bolt, new design by Trek. The receipt from the workshop also mentioned Locktite which made me a little puzzled to be honest, I was ensured by the mechanic that this should resolve the issue though.
Lo and behold, 20 hours on the bike later and the seatpost is moving again! Iâm really not sure anymore what to do - I love the bike but this is getting ridiculous.
@John_H_Madone_SLR6 certainly not 600 miles . . . not even 6000 miles. For some that ride a lot outdoors that might just be a little over 1 year. If that is the case then that needs to be disclosed on every madone. sale by Trek that this kit needs to be replaced often. As well they need to have a guarantee that a given yearâs isospeed parts will not be discontinued at the next change of wind direction in the is this proprietary parts space.
Glad they took care of youâŚI thought for sure you were gonna get a âsorry, user errorâ response.
Enjoy the new frame and HB upgradeâŚ.post pics once it is built up, please!!
Thank you, yes, I was happy to hear them taking care of it. I will post the picture, canât wait to see it myself!
I took my Madone to the LBS again. They took one look at me and the guy just asked if I was there with isospeed issue. As they already replaced the kit just 200 km ago, they said the wiggle in the seat post may be due to a micro damage in the frame and they will take it up with Trek to resolve.
Honestly Iâm not sure if I want to touch Madone again, it looks great and rides well, but maybe I should just try to replace it with Emonda frame and have a peace of mind.
Madone 2020 owner. Noticed the clicking/movement in the seatpost area. Took off the plastic cover an noticed crack in the frame at the bolthole. Sent back to the shop who were initially reluctant on sending to Trek saying it looks like a maintenance issue eg the bolt coming loose. Checked all manuals that were given and there is nothing mentioning this bolt at all or that it may come loose or a torque setting to tighten to. Eventually got it sent to Trek and they are replacing the frame. Should I be asking for further compensation on this? Initially I would have been satisfied with the replacement frame but the shop has annoyed me now. Frame will also be a different colour scheme - is it too much to ask for a new matching seatpost as the colours are going to be different now?
I would expect your new frame to come with a new matching seatpost - not an unreasonable request at all.
Why? You are having your frame replaced under warrantyâŚwhat else should you be compensated for?
Trek may be decent enough to send a color matched seatpost, but even that you arenât entitled to. Plenty of people through the years have ended up with a mismatched color fork or other part after warranty.
You are entitled to a replacement part, not color matching.
Hmm, I donât know - how about a faulty frame and the months waiting for a new one? Quite inconvenient. Luckily, Trek are decent and are replacing the seatpost also to match - something which the shop didnât even bother and refused to ask Trek for so had to go direct. Wonât be going via the shop for anything in the future.
And your frame IS being replaced, along with the seatpost (which Trek is not obligated to do)âŚas for the wait, unfortunately, that is the situation for the industry right now. The extra wait does not entitle you to additional compensation. Even in the âBefore Timesâ, a wait for a replacement frame was not uncommon.
